À propos of nothing

illuminatus's picture

I just downloaded the Jake Thackray box set from Amazon today.

It's bloody good. Nice to hear little nuggets like Lah Di Dah, Sister Josephine and Bantam Cock again.

He is marvellous

isn't he? 'Making bloody pottery' in 'The Brigadier' always reduces me to giggles. And 'I like a big bum on a woman it makes my day' must be among the finest opening lines in song.

"I downloaded a box set"

I think a little part of me died when I read that.

Yes

For me a large part of a box set is indeed the box.

Normally

I'd agree because I don't usually download albums at all, but the digital version was 7.99 and the CDs 11.99. And I got to listen to them straight away

Jake

would probably have written a song about virtual boxes in virtual warehouses.

La-di-dah

Is so well observed - I don't recall any other songs so explicitly dealing with the perils of meeting (and putting on a good face for) meeting the in-laws.

I did find that quite a number of other tunes are rather queasily 'smutty' - a bit too seaside postcard.

The Answer is, as rarely...

Sean O'Hagan, Travel from his debut EP The High Llamas

I change the channel
you change your head
we sleep together in your father's bed
and I hope, pray that he's not coming down
i hope, pray that he's not

you fix the breakfast
i fix the chair
your mother's picture, your mother's stare
and I hope, pray that she's not coming down
yes I hope, pray that she's not
coming around

i love the way you are
we're travelling so far

your brother's crying
screams from above
he needs attention, he needs your love
and I hope, pray that he's not coming down
i hope, pray that he's not
coming around

i love the way you are
we're travelling so far
i love the way you are
we're travelling so far

and I hope, pray that they're not coming down
i hope, pray that they're not
coming around
i love the way you are
we're travelling so far
i love the way you are
we're travelling so far

Love Jake

"Jake's progress" was one of my Dad's favourite albums which I still have. Fantastic lyrics.
