A note to anyone thinking of getting an iPhone
Posted by David Hepworth on 9 February 2010 - 9:34am.
When I bought mine I got a 16GB model because I don't want to have more than a certain amount of music at a time. I'm not one of those people who has to carry their entire record collection around with them. However, I underestimated the appeal of apps and how much space some of them would take up. If I did it again I would probably go for a bigger capacity.

You're just setting up your excuse, aren't you?
"iPad is available with a choice of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of flash storage, giving you lots of room for your photos, movies, music, apps and more."
iPad.....
in a choice of 16G, 32G or 64G.... is that for light, normal and heavy flow days ?
How big would you go?
What do you consider adequate space?
I'm thinking of taking the iTouch plunge, but am uncertain of which size. Budget-wise 32GB is a possible.
Like you I don't carry my entire library around with me and think that around 16GB of music and 8GB of TV/Movies would be enough. Do you think 8GB would be enough storage for a non-gaming, moderate apps user?
Up to you...
...but at the moment this is how mine divides up:
Audio 4.48 GB
Video: 429.5 mb
Photos: 101.7 mb
Apps: 9.39 GB
(It also tells me I've got 4.32 GB free, which can't be right.)
A Trim...
I've always thought I carry too much music around with me and that a bit of culling was in order. Looking at your 4.48 GB, I don't feel so bad about leaving stuff off now.
Daft questions - How do you decide what stays on? (Playcount? Last Played? Mood?) and how often does the content change?
I have to admit to something quite geeky. I do have a spreadsheet set up which rates my music depending on playcount and Last Played.
(Hangs head in shame!)
I haven't even thought about
I haven't even thought about it but my iphone is getting full.
I actually still use my ipod, I'm not a big fan of the one on the iphone: too loud and it skips easily
Skips easily?
Its solid state - do you mean the UI is too sensitive so it skips to next track?
Skipping
I think I might know what the problem is. I think either an update about 6 mths ago or possibly on the itunes remote app I uplaoded around the same time allows you to skip a track by 'flipping' the ipod touch. I've found that whenever I have the ipod in my pocket while waking it has a habit of skipping tracks on it's own. i haven't worked out how to change this feature as i don't walk around with it too much. I mostly use mine in the car. I hope this helps to point out the possible problem. I'm not able to find out how to sort it at the moment as I'm at work.
Could this be "Shake to
Could this be "Shake to Shuffle" you're referring to? If so, go into Settings>iPod and see if Shake to Shuffle is set to "on". Switch it off if it is - This may save a lot of future annoyance.
thanks
chk when i get back home.
video and apps
When things are brighter I travel a lot, and find the iphone great for tv shows, movies and video podcasts. But they eat up the battery and the space. My kids love the games and that bleeding JLS video.
I got the 16gb and wish I had the 32gb. I end up taking my ipod along as well.
Audio 4gb
Video 8gb
Photos .1gb
Apps 1gb
Other? 0.5gb What is other?
Other
would presumably be the phone's operating system and built in Apps.
What is other?
I'd always assumed it was the system files on my iPod. Happy to be told I'm wrong.
EDIT: Snap! Simultaneous posting.
I'm considering getting an iTouch...
..and intend to use my Spotify premium account rather than copying over MP3s. Does anyone know how much "space" offline Spotified tracks take up?
Simplify App is a life saver
I have to give this APP a big thumbs up. Lets you stream all the music on your pc to your iphone or ipod touch. So long as your pc's on, you can then access all your music anywhere that you've got a wireless connection. Solves a lot of storage problems. Details at http://www.simplifymedia.com/
+1 to Simplify
+1 to Simplify - my iPhone is the 16Gb version too but you don't need to carry any music/podcasts on it if you have this app. The quality of the streamed music is _marginally_ lower but you shouldn't notice a real difference given you'll be listening on the move
The iPhone Highway...
... was a road I nearly travelled down, but veered down the HTC Hero route instead. Why? The flexibility in storage - all dependent on the micro SD Card I choose to use. Playing music is not something that really interests me on a phone - that's why I have an iPod Classic.
I appreciate it would have cut down the number of gadgets to carry around - but the fuss and hassle of updating the music to put on a phone would leave my mind in a twist (more so than usual).
The phone then becomes just a haven for Apps. Flickster has come in very useful, Facebook has been fun, Google Maps helped me find a friends new flat on Sunday - these are a few of the benefits of smartphones.
I've even used it as a telephone...
To save money on the initial purchase
You could always take a leaf out of Nelson Mandela's book
So you'd need to have to have a rough idea of
how much data (music/video) you're likely to put on there, and what sort of quality you'll want, so if it's for listening through your stereo at home you'll probably want higher quality (more space required) than if it'll be listened to in a car or on a train.
I've got a little under 500 audio tracks on a 4GB memory card in my (non-iPhone) device at about 128Kbps (which is supposed to go across at 54MB/hour, but that has never meant much to me). They're fairly average length, mostly rock tracks (so no 30 minute epics), so you may be able to extrapolate out from that. If you raise the quality you will obviously need to recalibrate.
Video is obviously going to take a lot more too. I converted a 2hr50 TV show from HD to iPod format, and it went down to about 250MB or so (down from just under 7GB of HD).
I have no idea what the apps are going to need. It'll depend what you're using.
If you're going for your entire collection, even at 128Kbps I'd guess the average Massive member (if you'll pardon the term) might require a fair bit more than 32GB (roughly 4000 tracks by my estimation).
It's the data
Just like every PDA I've ever owned it's not the applications that take up the space it's the data that you have to go with them. I'm currently using an ipod Touch as a PDA (because the smallest one is relatively cheap) and I had I had to decide on the Wikipedia app that used 2G for the data or the one using 8G. Obviously Spotify is going to take a lot and pdf files can be big (I like to keep manuals of other portable gadgets on it and they are often quite large).
