A Not So Silent Night
Any other members of the collective at the Albert Hall last night? A truly marvellous evening in the company of some remarkable musicians.
Martha Wainwright, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Guy Garvey, Ed Harcourt - all excellent; with many other wonderful performances from the supporting cast.
But what really made the evening for me and the good lady wife was the truly astounding voice of Rufus Wainwright. I must confess that I'd never grasped his appeal before last night, but, my God, can he hold a note!
The highpoint of the evening was when he had all the microphones switched off on stage and he sang "Minuits, chrétiens" (the French version of O Holy Night) with just the accompaniment of his mum on piano. He held 5,000 people utterly captivated and the place just erupted at the end of the song. A very special moment.

An extended McGarrigle/Wainwright family singsong round the ol' joanna. Lovely, it is.
Apparently there's a Christmas one too - I didn't know dat, will have to investigate.
Thanks
I'll check that out.
His voice
I don't get it I'm afraid. Sounds rather like a nasal foghorn to me.
Wish I was there
A friend at work was there too. She's raving about it. Sounds fantastic. I was surprised to hear that Martha had given birth and made the gig. She was on Jules Holland a few weeks back very pregnant.
Ah, the magic of YouTube!
