A great young 'un and a great old 'un
Posted by adze thuggery on 19 November 2008 - 7:33pm.
My grandson, who will be two on Friday, has always swayed, jumped, danced whenever music comes on. While looking at Muppets on the computer yesterday we came upon 'Muppet Singing Motown'. It's wrongly labelled, and is actually Atlantic, but when it started he was shaking all of his tail feathers and just about everything else - the biggest reaction I've ever seen. I'm hoping that this appreciation of classics is genetically transferred from me through his mum - her early years included many playings of the 'This Is Soul' sampler. I'll attach the You Tube clip below, but wonder if any one else on the site has kids or grandkids showing clear appreciation of 'proper' music?

My nephew (1 1/2)
adores Led Zeppelin - apparently "Immigrant Song" is his favourite, and he tries to bang his toys on the floor along in time.
He's also just been introduced to Madness, who also get the "sit up and hit the floor in joy" seal of approval.
Responsible parenting, I say!

For twelve years I've organised music in primary schools, including the music played as the children walk in and out of assembly. I'm proud of the roster of great music the children have been exposed to, but the greatest reaction of all was to Nina Simone's "My Baby Just Cares For Me".
I'll never forget the nursery kids filing in, each child immediately picking up the beat of the song, and grooving along to their place in the hall. It was a wonderful sight.
Said this before, but...
My six year old was three when he saw me watching Eat The Document and asked "Is that Bob Dylan, Dad? And is that The Band?" Very soon after that he determined that if there was harmony singing going on, that clearly meant that it was The Everly Brothers or The Beach Boys.
My thirteen year old daughter made me beam with pride the other week. She was talking to her fourteen year old friend about Astral Weeks. I had no part in the conversation. She turned to her friend and said, "If you like Van Morrison, you really should try The Band".
You couldn't make it up.
My grand-daughter show promise....
When all else fails, and she is crying, it is to my knee she comes.I go and sit by the computer on i-tunes random. To the horror of her mother, a minute or 2 jogging along to dub reggae, country rock or Morris On and she's a happy 6 month old. Subversity rules.

Is a preschool mod a "moddler"?
My three year old loves "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake" though I suspect it's Stanley Unwin she really likes
