A Future Christmas Classic - 'When The Thames Froze'

Georgedivided's picture

This is utterly beautiful, the kind of song that makes Christmas bearable.
It made me cry.

"God damn this snow, will I ever get where I want to go,
So I skate across the Thames, hand in hand with all my friends'

Smith & Burrows 'When The Thames Froze'

I heard that on the radio the other day

Perhaps it's a grower, but I thought it was a terrible dirge. Quite depressing too.

Love it

AND there's a whole seemingly Christmas themed album too.

I've just checked

as I recognised the voice and this is the singer from Editors (and the drummer from Razorlight, you all probably knew that anyway). I liked them both and I like this too, thanks for posting.

Thanks

Emusic isn't offering it in Canada, so I'm glad to hear it here. A wee bit C******y, perhaps?

Now, who among us warm their hands by the lambent glow of the CD burner whilst making Christmas mixes? Near the end of November, I get the itch, having done so for ten years or more now.

An ice honeymoon

A chap I worked with told me he got married in the winter of 1963 - he said that he left the registry office in Kingston with his new GLW and they walked on the frozen Thames to their central London hotel for their wedding night.

I said "that must have taken a while..." he replied "a gentleman never tells" and tapped his nose. I was talking about the walk.

Loving this!

The album is now on Spotify - it really is fab. Simon Mayo tweeted this morning how much he likes it.
There's a fantastic cover of Yazoo's 'Only You' thrown in for some reason but it really is a great Christmas album...

Fav on the album

This is my favourite off the album. Reminds me of quite a few drunken festive periods -

the two 80's classics cover versions are the icing on the very tasty Chrsitmas cake

How was it?

Gig any good Jude?

??

How many of you posters are from the record company?

It's not terrible, but it so wants to be "a future Christmas classic", that I find it a bit toe curling. Still Merry Christmas all the same.

I'm not

0
Leedsboy | 7 December 2011 - 11:55pm

Nope

nor me. It's just very good, in my opinion

Nor me...

Wish I did work for a record company - I'm sure it would be much more interesting than what I do!

Bit cynical Jonnyartist. Surely 85% of this forum is made up of people talking about things they like...

Hand up over here, I am.

No, I'm not.

I think it's nice.

I wish Tom Smith wouldn't sing in that weird accent, though. You're English, man. Sing like it.

But a nice song. I've all kinds of time for Andy Burrows - more talent in his taint than is to be found in the entire rest of Razorlight, so I was prepared to live with the Editors association, for his sake. Glad I did. The album's not at all bad, and I see absolutely nothing wrong with consciously trying to write a new Christmas standard. There are few enough, and I have no problem with this: it's a good song. It deserves to do well.
