Is this Phoney Maconie?

David Hepworth's picture

Our own Maconie says this isn't him. What do you think? Let the people decide!

This one raged in our household all Christmas/New Year. My finely tuned ear for both Maconie's educated Wiganese and the flat vowels of West Yorkshire led me to believe that it definitely couldn't be the erudite indie fancy Dan of the airwaves, rather someone from approximately Huddersfield who DFS were hoping to pass off as him. Not 100 per cent convinced that it's Corrie's topped ginger mechanic but he fits the profile.

Perhaps it's some kind of Stuart Macoine tribute act.

Thomas Craig? Pseudonym, clearly. Stuart's going for that rugged, Bond-sounding feel:

The debate rages on. I & a good few others raised this with him on his Saturday show when the first 'soundalike' ads appeared on Boxing Day. I figured he might need the 'voiceover fee plus corner suite discount' package after they chopped half an hour off his slot & gave it to (dear God) Dermot O'Leary, but he was fervent in his denials. Nice work if you can get it, mind.

I'm pretty sure the voice in question belongs to Thomas Craig, the actor who played the character of Tommy Harris in Coronation Street prior to being murdered (rather than after!) by his daughter with a monkey wrench to the back of the head.

I'd always assumed it was Stuart doing the TV ads. Can someone check out his house for signs of DFS furniture (those lime green sofas shouldn't be too hard to spot...)

In our house we always thought it was Stuart. And we couldn't blame him, really. We all agreed we'd do the same if asked; take the money, lad, and stick 2 fingers up to credibility...

The real test would be an Ad with the words "a £1,000 pounds" in it, I think, it sounds deeper and more Northern than the Mac daddy usually does. I imagine when he signed up for it he thought DFS were a german 1960's jazz rock act.

I don't believe him. I think there's a showbiz gene or two lurking somewhere within that gruff northern exterior. Evidence? Check out the Radio 2 website and the Radcliffe/Maconie page. Now, in a certain shot someone bears a striking resemblance to one of the 2 Ronnies. And it ain't a Radcliffe/Barker match either.

I was convinced it was Maconie. Especially in the other advert were 'Maconie' claims they only have two sales per year. Yeah but each one lasts for six months.
If it isn't the great man, who is it?
