10 track compilations

Steve Turner's picture

Many compilations are over long or have some filler. I have toyed with idea of 10 track playlists for certain bands on my IPOD. The following are 10 track compilations for my overall 3 favourite artists. I have tried wherever possible to avoid the obvious but on occasion a song is too good to leave out:-

Steely Dan
---------
Sign in Stranger
Bodhisattva
Charlie Freak
Barrytown
Everyones gone to the movies
Green Earrings
Kid Charlemagne
Cousin Dupree
Rikki dont lose that number
Hey nineteen

Richard Thompson
--------------
Shoot out the lights (live)
Never again
Keep your distance

Elvis Costello

I have always regarded HD

as the most unrepresentative of all Steely Dan's songs. Think about it - a cod-reggae number with additional Frampton style Gizmo solo - and it was a single!

0
Steerpike | 20 August 2009 - 9:45pm

It's not really Cod-Reggae

in that it may use the same rock-steady beat, but the vocals don't have any affectation (A la Sting?), and the subject matter is more Latin (with bits of French thrown in for good measure) than pure Caribbean.

The 'giszmo'd' /wah-wah guitar is still technically a stand-out solo in its timing, feel and execution.

There rests the case for the defence M'Lud.

0
Badlands | 2 September 2009 - 1:22pm

Quintessence

...Giants (live version from forthcoming QE Hall '71 CD)

...er, that takes us up to 40 minutes, so can we leave it at one track?

0
Rigid Digit | 19 August 2009 - 7:51pm

great idea!

I will give some thought to how I would represent The Ramones and The Fleshtones in this ...

Pat Carty | 18 August 2009 - 10:44pm

Nice.

Tie You Up (The pain of Love) was the second track on my randomiser this morning. Hadn't heard it for years, given that I always thought "Undercover" was pretty crap. I enjoyed it, though.

I would have to have "Soul Survivor" in my Stones top ten aswell.

0
Iainso | 19 August 2009 - 1:17pm

and Let it Loose

and 100 Years Ago from "Goat's".

You'd have to pick up an obliigatory Keef track too

Ok, Persuaders be gone

Midnight Cowboy makes it!

0
DougieJ | 19 August 2009 - 11:57pm

Too much Bondage...

...so ditch Diamonds Are Forever and replace with Seance on a Wet Afternoon or the easied-up version A Lion in Winter.

0
Con Coleman | 20 August 2009 - 1:10pm

Late reply

sorry, been on holiday.

My feeble attempts at this challenging task so far have been to try and strike a balance between official record company diktat and objective fans' opinion. Remember, this is within the ridiculous, although intellectually bracing, confines of a mere ten tracks

As such, I reluctanctly agreed to the substitution of Wednesday's Child for Midnight Cowboy, but which 'Bondage' track would you replace, in all honesty?

0

Have seen them about 5 times

and every set list has been different but the constant is The Whole of the moon which is a great song but deserves a rest. 'A song for life" is indeed great but equally I could have picked the whole Fishermans Blues album.

Good list but

Cowboy Junkies are making music now thats as good as anything they've ever done. Here's a list from their last 3 studio records - Open, One Soul Now and At The End of Paths Taken (I've ignored Early 20th Century Blues as it was a predominantly covers record)

One Soul Now

0
Retro Man | 4 September 2009 - 11:50am

well ....

this was a really hard 10 to assemble - and it was done from memory, which is probably why the older favourites were more represented.

I could probably make room for "I Am What I Am" - but what to leave out ?

BTW - did you get the Fleshtones film ? It's great. (Well, I would say that, wouldn't I ? They appear to act as Kryptonite on my critical faculties. I spent £20 in 1984 on a lovely vinyl bootleg of them from Philadelphia, at a time when £20 was a serious chunk of money! That's great too, of course)

0
el hombre malo | 4 September 2009 - 12:16pm

Yeah, I know technically Cramps & Meteors were not necessarily "gothic" but then neither am I!

Brian Jonestown Massacre - an introduction

My introduction to BJM, sat in the departure lounge at Ayers Rock Airport, a TV on the wall is tuned to MTV, cue this. A bit surreal to say the least.

I'm not sure what is weirder...

That the band made a video for that in the first place or that MTV would play it!

That track would probably be the last thing I'd play to try and impress the virtues of BJM on anyone!
