One Player One Manager

A bit of a 'pub quiz' kind of question this, but how many footballers have spent their entire club career under one manager? To qualify the footballer must have retired (therefore Scholes and Giggs don't count). So far, the only one we can think of is Gary Neville.

Kirsty MacColl

Readers who pay attention to my Twitter timeline will be aware that I bought a few CDs this weekend, one of which was The Best of Kirsty MacColl.

Now, I'm not completely ignorant in regards to Kirsty MacColl. I'm aware of a hanful of her songs, including her cover version of 'Days' recorded in the mid 90s (probably my first introduction to her (via a Now CD)). I know she's the female lead in one of the greatest Christmas songs of the last thirty years and that she tragically died in a boating accident.

Apart from that, however, that's all I knew. Still, it was enough to tempt me into buying the aforementioned Best Of. Often I'm aware that a compilation album can be misleading and doesn't necessarily tell the complete story of an artist, but if her studio albums are this joyful then she's earnt herself another fan.

Eighties Albums

The Eighties, they were awful weren't they? All those protests, a Tory PM nobody seemed to like, terrible hairstyes and would Bruce Forsyth ever get off the TV? Thank Fun Boy Three none of that applies anymore!

Still, some of the music was pretty good apparently, and I'm in the mood for something from the decade. So, if you were forced at gunpoint etc, what is the one album you'd recommend from that decade?

A debate about death on Facebook

Currently one of those chain-mail(?) statuses is doing the rounds on Facebook in regards to Gary Speed. I will re-post it as I've witnessed it:

"Gary Speed, a sports manager, takes his own life and receives a stupendous amount of respect and homage paid to him.

A soldier from 5 rifles was also killed the same day, half Gary's age and died whilst serving our country, yet all he receives is a 10 second mention on the radio then the world forgets him.

It is sad that Gary Speed died, but did so by his own choice let us remember - but i don't like the fact that we live in a world that the only deaths we concern ourselves with are celebrities, not heroes.

Share this if you too support our glorious heroes, r.i.p ♥"

This has caused some particularly furious debate amongst a number of people in regards to how people should be remembered, or whether or not one death is more important than another. A few of the main points of argument are as follows:

1. A soldier knows what he's letting himself in for.
2. Gary Speed was 'just' a footballer.
3. Depression is an illness and should be treated as such.
4. A soldier is doing a service for the country.

I'm not actually sure why I'm posting this, but I thought it might be worth talking about.

ATM: Weekend breaks

My brother and his fiancee have been particularly good to me this year and I want to get them something good for Christmas to show my gratitude. The main idea I have is to send them off somewhere nice and romantic for a weekend for a mini-break. However, I don't know where to send them. This is where you come in. I want recommendations for places to go, and places to stay (ideally in England, please).

Thanks

Sibling Rivalry

At work today we've been unsuccessfully trying to think of bands with both a brother and a sister within them. It's easy to think of bands of brothers (Beach Boys, Kinks, Oasis, Jackson 5, Dire Straits, National, Kings of Leon etc) and sisters (Sister Sledge, Nolans, Shangri-Las, Ronettes etc) but we struggled to think of many brother/sister line ups.

Here's the four we thought of:

Carpenters
Corrs
Magic Numbers
Same Difference

Surely there's got to be more?

Family Trees

At the grand old age of twenty-something, I have decided to start researching my family tree and wondered how many of you had done this yourself, or if anybody had any useful tips for me? For instance, is it worth subscribing to these internet genealogy sites (i.e. what benefits will I get from it etc?)?

Hotels In Liverpool

Hello,

My wonderful friend that I met whilst I was studying at Liverpool Hope is getting married in July (hurrah!) and I'm invited (Do I need a new hat?!)

Now, everytime I've been there I've not had to stay at a hotel because I've either stayed with her, or I've had my own place to stay whilst I was studying there. So, I'm looking to see if any of you lot can recommend any good, budget hotels for me and whoever I can persuade to be my guest for the day. The nearer to the city-centre, the better; the reception is at the Adelphi, but that's fully booked.

Thanks,

Tom.

Rubbish Musicians

Currently my new favourite game on Twitter, and I've noticed a few members of the massive playing it too. The rules are easy to pick up, as I will demonstrate by a few of my suggestions:

Bleurgh
UBFaulty
Netto and The Bunnymen
Pink Flawed
Poxy Music
Cruddy Holly
Candle Light Orchestra
Tone Def Leppard

etc.

Plagiarism In The (Print) Media

Just wanted to ask a quick question on behalf of a friend who's finding their work being published in local/national newspapers/on the internet without so much as a thank you, or even permssion being asked. It involves an interview that he did for an amateur videocast he presents, from which quotes have been lifted directly and pasted into other articles. What I want to know is is this common practice amongst journalists, does he have a leg to stand on if he wants to confront anyone and what are the rules regarding this sort of plagiarism?

Where do I recognise this photo from?

It rings a bell, but I don't know if I'm imagining it.

Beach Boys Beach Reads

I've been on holiday for the past fortnight, and have spent that time rediscovering semi-forgotten interests and bands (one of whom are the HMRH). I've exhausted my bulging collection of Beach Boys hits (c.f. a best of, and Pet Sounds) and I'm currently enjoying an afternoon spent listening to the Pet Sounds box set on Spotify- I especially love the way Brian Wilson managed to incorporate modern adverts into the earliest mixes of the record.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, as is my want, I now want to read about them. So if any of the Massive can recommend any tomes dedicated to the HMRH then I'll be rather grateful. Particularly looking for any 'Revolution In The Head' style criticism about their songs, especially those on 'Pet Sounds', though I'm also interested in the well-written biography.

All suggestions are welcome, and here's something to get you smiling on a Saturday evening (let me hear those harmonies, boys and girls):

I Have Never..

I'm a music lover and yet I've never owned a vinyl record, nor do I have any interest in doing so.

I've bought only a handful of singles.

Q Magazine

Does anybody have next month's copy of Q yet? It's apparently got Jay-Z on the cover? If so, are there tour dates for KT Tunstall within the listings? I've heard rumours there are and wanted to make sure.
