One Song - Right Now
If you could take just one song right now, not a classic, not your favourite band, not your favourite artist, just your favourite song of right now, what is it?
This is mine right now.
Lyrically for a guy in his 40's I connect with it. For today anyway.
Death Cab For Cutie - Brothers On A Hotel Bed
You may tire of me as our December sun is setting
'Cause I'm not who I used to be
No longer easy on the eyes
These wrinkles masterfully disguise
The youthful boy below
who turned your way and saw
Something he was not looking for
Both a beginning and an end
But now he lives inside someone he does not recognize
When he catches his reflection on accident
On the back of a motor bike
With your arms outstretched trying to take flight
Leaving everything behind
But even at our swiftest speed
We couldn't break from the concrete
In the city where we still reside
And I have learned
That even landlocked lovers yearn
For the sea like navy men
'Cause now we say goodnight
From our own separate sides
Like brothers on a hotel bed
You may tire of me as our December sun is setting
'Cause I'm not who I used to be
True Blood - Something New To Look Forward To
I was over in the States a couple of weeks ago chasing my missing shirt that I thought might be in the head office of Lehman Brothers. Unfortunately it was not and I'm still trying to locate it.
During some downtime I caught a new series called TRUE BLOOD on HBO. Tremendous stuff. Its created by Alan Ball the man behind Six Feet Under and the writer of American Beauty. It stars Anna Paquin she of The Piano (Second-YoungestOscar) and Rogue of X-Men.
It also stars as seems to be the case in these HBO series, Stephen Moyer of the parish of Brentwood Essex.
The take is vampires co-existing with humans now that they are legal. The story takes place in a small Louisiana town and follows the fortunes of Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress at a diner, and her relationship with vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).
Its not out here yet, but it will be and I think its going to be worth your time especially now that they've got the second series.
And its very Racy and very violent in a HBO kinda way.
The first 6 episodes are already out there if you get my drift.
I think this one is going to run and run.
Its also got a great music intro. And this is it.
World Gone Mad - Michael Douglas asked about Wall Street crisis
Jesus Wept, Gordon I mean Michael on the state of the world.
Classic Comedies Under the Radar
I got handed a Steve Martin/Eddie Murphy film called Bowfinger a couple of weeks back and got around to watching it last night. I needed plenty of persuading because I wouldn't consider myself a fan of either. Maybe 20 years ago but certainly not in the lately.
But this is just a classic. Its along time since something genuinely had me doubled over with laughter. Maybe I had no expectations but it really was a return to form. And although the form may have departed just as quickly, if you haven't seen it I'd suggest you check it out.
But if I missed this maybe I missed some more. Any ideas bloggers?
Didn't we used to...?
Have a Friday Feeling Song?
Well today is Friday and this is mine,
The Raveonettes, You Want The Candy. Have a good weekend.
The MTV Vampires & The MTV VMA's 2008
I know its not the bag of many of you on The Word Blog but I recorded this over the weekend and watched it (with lots of Fast Forwarding) last night.
What struck me is that MTV have sucked the life out of Rock and Roll/RnB and all we are left with is The Jonas Brothers, Britney Spears and Promise Rings.
For those that didn't see it, it was one of the most insipid pieces of music television I ever had the misfortune to watch.
It actually made The Brits look edgy. The cartoon rock rebellion portrayed was laughable. (Mind you that probably always been the case).
Then today I walked into Zavvi at lunchtime and they were playing Cape Canaveral off the new album by Conor Oberst (he of Bright Eyes). Although I have a couple of Bright Eyes albums I didn't bother with this for some reason. But it was beautiful and edgy.
But you wont see him on any MTV awards (probably because his ballsack is still fully intact).
And you have bands like The Shins and Death Cab for Cutie who have that certain something but will never be at home at this kind of Gig because they don't have the ear of Paris Hilton or that cohort.
And for the record Russell Brand (no great favourite of mine ) did offer up something different and I thought he was quite good actually.
MTV proof that you can actually suck the lifeblood out of music!
For the record this is the Conor Oberst track mentioned above, in a live setting (naturally). Give it a listen. I think you'll find it rather good.
Granny Said Thanks to Mr Harrison
We had a BBQ yesterday. Mrs Springer played something in the evening from the more mellow section of our CD collection. What was it ?
From all those years ago and very nice it was too. Who curated it? A certain Andrew Harrison. The general consensus was that for something that came free it was "top notch".
And Granny who sat sipping her glass of wine was very complementary of the ambience that the said CD provided. Time for another mellow gem Andrew methinks.
Don Felder - Heaven And Hell
Was going to buy this. I think I heard its a good read. Anyone care to advise if it worth wasting hard earned or not?
Wouldn't like to pick up another Ronnie Wood again so soon if you get my drift.
Cheers.
The Word - Still Controversial Shock

Yoko and Paul McCartney not very happy with Norma Phillips!
Gun Songs
Listened to Steely Dan's Pretzel Logic and forgot how good this is.
Then I thought of Kenny Rogers
and wondered how many great Gun Songs can we get?
How do you GET your Music
I'm very curious about this.
Back in the day (when you could actually keep up with what was actually being released) I bought 1-2 albums per week.
As I got older and reached the demographic targeted by The Word (see http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/advertisers Advertisers/Media Pack at bottom of the page) I was buying about 10 albums per month and possibly more.
Then DVD's, Play Station Games etc., (where do you stop?)
But in this day and age the amount of new releases and potentially interesting stuff on release is staggering. So what do you do?
I personally have bought very little from Itunes as I would rather DRM free music. Thanks Word Downloads (although to be fair I haven't made a purchase there either) although I do use Beatport for Dance related stuff which thankfully is DRM free.
Do many of you out there go illegal? Torrents etc.
Anything new in the last few years has been been double checked at 320bpm on Bit Torrent before I make a purchase.
Do I delete it afterwards whether I buy or not?
Certainly not.
I just decided I couldn't be arsed buying bucket loads of tripe with one good song.
Do I feel guilty for "stealing"?
Definitely not. I have one room in my house that stands testament to supporting the industry. And I still catch more than an average amount of Gigs during the year.
But I just wonder how many of you are sporadically legit and scan your purchases like me? Or is my moral compass off kilter?
Cureheads Ahoy
Listen to this. Its Bat For Lashes covering The Cure's 'A Forest' from upcoming album Perfect as Cats: A Tribute to the Cure;

Going up the Country
After Rob Fitzpatrick's excellent introduction to Dawn Landes and the WST Bluegrass Band doing Peter, Bjorn & John's Young Folks, http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/old-folks-do-young-folks, I think you might find Kitty, Daisy and Lewis doing Canned Heat's Going up the Country equally interesting.
Or not !
But as the man said "What's not to like"?
