PEARL JAM

After 18 years waiting to see one of their own shows ( saw them Headline Leeds 2 years ago ) I was like a crazed young rocker again. Absolutely gobsmacking show.

Am I alone amongst the massive who feel they are the most genuine and rewarding band in American musical history?

This album is going to melt my brain on Monday

The Dead Weather ~ Horehound

just heard preview of album...I've Appreciated but never been a massive fan of White Stripes [De Stijl was great and a few singles ] or Raconteurs but think Jack has hit the muthaload with this one. It continues on from the great Bond theme [ the best for a long time]

Quincy Jones

Before all the Diana-esque diatribe over the death of the "King of Pop" i'd like to praise the true genius behind this unfortunate Waif's megastardom...Mr Quincy Jones.

Short question; may contain "The Wire" content but absolutely no Bob

Actually it's all about "the wire"

Considering all the other high tech equipment in use by Baltimores finest Is there any specific reason why all the surveillance in "The Wire" is done with film cameras rather than digital?

It's bugging me.

I realise it's not a documentary. :)

Blatant Excuse

this is just a blatent excuse to celebrate the fact that I'm going to see Pearl Jam in August!!

I've been a fan since they first hit British shores [ due to working for Our Price records I was officially the first owner of 'Ten' in my town...aren't I fabulous]

However due to Work commitments and other reasons I never managed to see them live apart from in 2006 at Leeds festival..[ I drove down from Scotland, watched Pearl Jam and drove back ...didn't see anyone else[ okay I may have caught the end of Slayer and a dreadful Placebo set but they didn't register].. that's how desperate I was to see them

But now I can finally see them as they intended, THEIR gig...albeit a large stadium.

Do any other readers still get a juvenile excitement about the prospect of seeing one of their favourite acts?

Has anyone been thwarted from seeing their heroes and reduced to thinking it will never be..?

17 years wait man !! but I'm there and gonna love every second..

I get a chill sometimes...

"Life imitates art far more than art imitates life."

Sometimes when I read some posts I get the feeling that Oscar Wilde was onto something here.

Here is an example donated by the Wonderful/Terrible Brett Easton Ellis from his disturbing yet brilliant American Psycho.

PATRICK BATEMAN "Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums..... Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument.... In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism.... Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock... Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds... But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite. "

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Patrick Bateman: Do you like Huey Lewis and the news?
Paul Allen: They're OK.
Patrick Bateman: Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
Paul Allen: Hey Halberstram.
Patrick Bateman: Yes, Allen?
Paul Allen: Why are their copies of the style section all over the place, d-do you have a dog? A little chow or something?
Patrick Bateman: No, Allen.
Paul Allen: Is that a rain coat?
Patrick Bateman: Yes it is! In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.
[raises axe above head]
Patrick Bateman: Hey Paul!
[he bashes Allen in the head with the axe, and blood splatters over him]
Patrick Bateman: TRY GETTING A RESERVATION AT DORSIA NOW YOU FUCKING STUPID BASTARD! YOU, FUCKING BASTARD!
Now tell me if any of that seems familiar.
Fictitious Weirdy Beardies !!!
I was prompted to write this because of the flashing banner ^ above.
The Great Lake Swimmers eh?
The Besnard Lakes
Young Mountain
etc. etc. etc.
It's like the current preponderance of coffee shops on our high streets...it's just smacks of phoney posturing.
Lot's of Plaid, Beards, Home made instruments, recording in shacks etc.
It reeks of marketing.
It's like The Band meets Neil Young meets Grunge.
Should I be so cynical? Don't get me wrong I've been a fan of Iron and Wine and Banhart, Vetiver etc. for about 8 years ...
Here's some phoney names for weirdy beardy nature bands.
The Queequeg Rowers
The Griddle and the Boy
High Cedars
The Spring Melt
Arondiak
Bouganville Carpets
The tenon-saw Glades
Gossamer Highland Travellers
Any more?
