Glen Tilbrook - He can sing a bit!
I've just listened to the album he's just released with 9 Below Zero under the name of The Co-Operative. There's a version of 'Some Day I'll Fly Away' on it which is just gorgeous. Also included is a great cover of 'You Never Give Me Your Money' originally written by the Difford & Tilbrook of their generation - smashing!
Listening to music on the good old hi-fi
Most of my music listening these days is either in the car or on an IPod dock in the kitchen. When the new Ry Cooder CD arrived this week I decided to give it it's first play on my hi fi i.e. good old fashioned cd player/amp/speakers combo which in recent years has been used less and less.
The sound from this CD is absolutely gorgeous and I was reminded how good music can sound from an 'old school' seperates system. I have since played it in the car and on the ipod dock and it's nowhere near as good.
My relationship with the proper hi fi is now officially back on and would urge any of you who have similair kit gathering dust in the corner to give it a go. If like me it's been a while, you'll be amazed at how much more involving the experience is, especially where the album is as well produced (to my ears anyway) as the new Ry Cooder.
Subscription copy not arrived yet?
Any other UK subscribers not received the new issue yet?
Don't know whether the problems in Londinium have caused the delay but my copy still hasn't found it's way to Glasgow.
Guilty Pleasure Time - Don't Look Back by Boston
Heard 'Don't Look Back' by Boston on my local classic rock radio station the other day and can't get it out of my head.
How can something so wrong feel so right? I know I shouldn't but I can't help myself. Punk was supposed to kill this sort of stuff once and for all but thank god it didn't. Courtesy of Spotify I've had a fling with this song over the last couple of days and had more guilty pleasure than Tiger Woods!
I'm now really tempted to go the whole hog and pay a quick visit to FOPP to buy the first two Boston albums as I need to be able to listen whilst driving - that way nobody else need know what I'm up to.
Try it yourself - just wait to the chorus and you'll be hooked too.
Who was the band playing on the Sun Studios documentary?
Did anyone see the Sun Studios docu yesterday on Sky Arts?
I caught all of 10 minutes before going out and heard a band playing in Sun Studios a song which may have been called 'Lost Weekend' (no it wasn't Lloyd Cole!), lead singer was wearing a stars and stripes wooly hat.
Band sounded good to me and I'm curious as to who they were - anyone know?
What's happening with E Music?
I've been a subscriber to E music for the last year, primarily using it to satisfy my new found enthusiasm for country (ish) flavoured music.
I have notced that a number of albums have been withdrawn of late i.e. some Steve Earle and James McMurtry albums etc.
Does anyone know the reason behind this? Have some record companies withdrawn content for contractual reasons?
How well do you know your albums?
When i was first getting into music I new every nuance of sound from my albums (I still can't listen to the intro to 'Sweet Gene Vincent' without hearing a scratch on my vinyl copy even though I now listen to it on CD), knew the track listings by heart, who played on the album, etc etc.
Now, firmly in middle age and probably around 1000 albums later, I don't even know the songtitles or even album titles of the majority of the stuff I've bought over the last few years or so - I just know I like it. Thankfully at least I can remember the artist!
For example, I'm a big Springsteen fan and enjoy his most recent album, but I'd be hard pushed to tell you the names of more than a couple of the songs on it.
Apart from the obvious possibility of (slightly premature)senility setting in I'm putting this down to the fact that I now download (legally via emusic / Itunes / amazon) the majority of my music therefore don't have that tactile association with lp/cd covers.
I feel strangely guilty about this lack of knowledge - anyone else feel the same?
