Thrown a curve ball

Did anyone ever mention a band to you and you just thought to youself i don't like them even though you'd never heard them. When i was in school many years ago you were either in the Glam camp or the rock camp and very rarely did the twain meet. I was into Bowie/T Rex/Sweet and some of my friends were into Zeppelin/ Genesis/ Yes etc and as much as we tried to intergrate each other into our music it rarely happened. I wouldn't listen to Rock music as i thought it was all ten minute drum solo's (ok it mostly was) and that was not my idea of fun. Over the last few years since getting back into vinyl i've found myself picking up cheap albums from record fairs and giving them a spin. I now have a great selection of Yes/ Genesis/ King Crimson albums and i can't believe all the great music i missed just down to my preconceptions of what i thought they'd sound like. My band of the moment is Emerson, Lake and Palmer.......you still there ? ,and i love a ten minute Bass/Keyboard/Drum solo as much as next man but sometimes, just sometimes they could pull out a thing of pure beauty. If you've never heard this before have a listen and if you have doesn't it still sound great.

Gordon Lightfoot

I picked up a copy of his album 'If you could read my mind' from a record fair yesterday for a quid. Not a lot to splash out for i know from someone i'd never heard before, but hey you know these things take up space. Quite frankly it's the and how do i say this the 'loveliest' thing i've heard in years.I find it quite worrying that there's just so much stuff out there that i've never heard and time is going so fast.

Stephen Stills

Sometimes you just have to get something out of your system and shout it from the rooftops. Stephen Stills is, and i don't think i'm being controversial here one of the best Singer/ Songwriters of the last fifty years, and as a guitar player he's right up there in the Clapton/ Hendrix camp as far as i'm concerned. Here is one of his finest tunes for your delictation. Ladies and Gentlemen please be upstanding for a living legend.

Good Jools Tonight

Magazine, Devendra Banhart, Jimmy Ruffin, Seasick Steve and Wolfmother. The show was only ruined by some talentless bint whom i've never heard of, who is probably riding high in the charts with a platinum selling album. Still can't have everything.

For One Night Illegally: the History of the Bootleg - BBC Radio 4

I know i'm way behind on this one but just having finished the book 'Bootleg' by Clinton Heylin i was wondering if anyone had a copy of this. I missed out on it when it was first aired and would love to hear it.

(Early) Genesis

I've been listening a lot to this band lately and am surprised how good they were. Being in my late forties i was just the right age when punk happened and that consumed my listening ears for many years, and after that i just kind of drifted into many genres including folk, Rock etc and prog kinda passed me by. I took a chance the other day and purchased a few of the early titles (Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Lamb lies down, Selling England), and i am a total convert. The strange thing is i've got no time for Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins but as a band they are totally brilliant. Any body else get a warm glow when they listen to 'The Battle Of Epping Forest' or am i a party of one.

Record Reviewzzzzzz

Is it just me or are they a complete waste of time ?.This must have been discussed here at one time or other but as i'm new cut me some slack please. Somebody writes a review of an album/book/film/gig whatever and tells us they like it it or don't like it what good is that to me ?. If i know an album is coming out by a band i like i'll buy it whatever the reviewer says. What if the reviewer wakes up in the morning like we all do sometimes with a hangover or a shitty attitude do you think the first album of the day is gonna get a five star rating i doubt it. Record Collector magazine does record reviews but they have a page devoted to all the albus/DVD's that are coming out the next month and that at the end of the day is all i need. Reviewers put down your pens (figuratively) we know you hate doing them anyway and get out on the road and start earning your wages.
