Anyone heard of Suzi Chung?
This sounds great, including the wig out guitar break at the end. Retro I know but I like it.
Dancing.....yes or no?
I have never been a dancer. In my younger days I jumped and bopped about under the influence. However, since my mid 20s I can count the times I have danced, without taking the piss, on one hand. I now can't dance without hamming it up... The reason is that I have and always will hate dancing...I just get bored. Even if I think I am going to like it, after 20 seconds I'm walking off the dance floor... I'll give it a go, but I still hate it. Is this normal? I think perhaps it is, unless you know better.
Classical Music Collection Part 2 please help.
We all know about Wagner and Hitler etc. Now I find that Herbert von Karajan was a fully signed up member of the Nazi party. His rise to power was facilitated by the huge hole left when all the talented Jewish musicians either left or were murdered in 1930s Germany.
I probably have more Karajan recordings than any other conductor. I am not happy. I must say that none of the recordings strike me as the greatest ever but I like some of them. However, now they are ruined by this new knowledge. I have, over the years, sorted my feelings out about Wagner, I thought the Stephen Fry documentary explored the Wagner/Nazi question really well and filled in a great deal of blanks for me.
So, dear massive, are there any other nasty surprises out there I should know about before I shell out anymore cash? You were all so helpful before. And, yes I know this is a rock magazine but the massive love a good chat about all sorts of stuff.
Alabama Shakes....
Worth watching I think.
Thanks to @LNDcalling twitter.
Classical Music Collection - Please Help
I've always enjoyed classical music and have about 100+ albums and CDs. I started buying by the composer and piece, then moved onto conductors and performers. Although out of the 100 or so titles only about 10 hit all the spots. Such as Bach, Cello Suites 1-6 played by Pablo Casals, Bach, Cello Sonatas played by Mischa Maisky & Martha Argerich. Shostakovich, String Quartets 1-13 by the Borodin Quartet and Brahms, Sextour #1 op18 with Jean-Claude Pennetier.
So what CDs would the massive recommend? For example, I am debating whether to splash out on The Ring, conducted by Georg Solti.
Boxing?
In the light of the recent Chisora and Haye punch up I was wondering what the massive think of boxing, I am torn. I think it is the ultimate challenge for anyone to stand toe to toe with someone of equal skill and fight, within a framework of rules. It is a test of skill, fitness, courage and determination. At its best it is an amazing feat of sporting excellence at its worse barbaric.
Although I think it is an amazing sport, and in many ways instils discipline, self esteem and can bring structure to someone’s life - you know the arguments. However, if it was put to a vote, I would ban it. The idea that the sole purpose is to knock someone out, causing trauma to the head is unacceptable, not to say extremely dangerous. Yes, I know other sports are dangerous but the main purpose of these sports is not to render your opponent unconscious. So for me, with a heavy heart, it would be banned.
Home taping did kill music!
I am not sure I can blame home taping but something has killed music. The last quarter of the 19th century and nearly all the 20th century saw an unprecedented explosion in popular music. There's no point listing the huge variety of types of music here, we all know what they are. For me this explosion stopped in the 90s with rap. There have been a few splutterings but everything since this time, mostly, if not entirely, has been disappointingly derivative. Maybe I'm just getting old but I feel very lucky to have lived through such an amazing time. I would love to get excited about new music but most of time just can't find any. Just like technology had a huge amount to do with the expansion of popular music, maybe it's technology that's finally killed it. I wonder what the massive think.
Talking of which I wrote this on my iPhone using Siri! Amazing.
WORD YOU ARE JUST WRONG.
The Buzzcocks at the RAR gig in Victoria Park? The Clash headlining? Do your homework. Clumsy!
I saw, X-Ray Specs, Steele Pulse, The Clash and finally at the top of the bill The Tom Robinson Band!
Very, very poor - I think you need to do some lines.
Snow, what is it good for?
I love snow. I love everything about it - especially the fact that London stops moving after a few c.m. However, the best thing is waking up to find the transport knackered and being forced to turn off the alarm and take the day off. Yes, I know hospitals, Doctors, blah, blah, blah have to make it in and when I was younger I walked miles to work. But I was misguided then. Any excuse to bunk off, I'll take. Work is over rated. I would rather kick snow about with Rab junior.
Any takers?
So, snow! What is it good for? Absolutely, doing nothing!
There's a Ghost in my House! Yeah, right!
Last night I found out someone I thought was rational and well read believed in ghosts and psychics! We had a heated debate. I found myself laughing, more than anything, at the ridiculous stories the person used to support their views. My counter arguments of , no real evidence were dismissed. They even thought that some ghosts had got wise and had stopped us photographing them, which explained why there are not millions of films and snaps of ghouls etc due to our CCTV and mobile phone camera age.
As with the conspiracy theories thread, I wonder what the massive think, or are boys just not interested in debating such nonsense?
Conspiracy Theories! Any takers?
Mrs Rab and I have just watched “Apollo 18” a second rate B movie, a bit of mindless fun. But it got me thinking, are there any conspiracy theories the massive think hold water. As for myself I have yet to come across one that holds my attention for more than a few minutes. It appears to me conspiracy therories all centre around selecting and promoting information that support the theory while omitting facts that undermine the argument (a bit like political arguments. All a bit of a yawn if you ask me. None-the-less, maybe you can enlighten me.
Drum Solos?
Does anybody really like a drum solo? Yeah, you can admire the skill or even like the odd section but a whole solo? "Toad", "Moby Dick" I don't think I have ever listened to them more than once, all the way through. Also when does a drum break (which I like) become a solo? I have just been listening to Thelonious Monk live in 1964. In the track "Evidence" there is a drum solo... it is just over a minute long. Now I say that is a solo and for me spoils the track. But I would say 15 seconds is a break. Or is it? I am setting a bench mark here. If you say you like drum solos I think you should have included one on a mix tape or play list. So any takers? And should we let drummers take part in this scientifically, iron clad survey?

This has been a long time coming. Now what about the other gang members?
