Do these charts explain anything?
We learned that cassette tapes made more money in the US in 1994 than CDs do TODAY.

p.s. Credit goes to my generation for peaking vinyl records at the dawn of our teenage years.

Missing Link: The King of Pop and The Wire
Richard Price was interviewed here in Seattle this morning. He is an interesting character. Hear it for yourself here.

Writing about Cops, Drugs and Crime with Author Richard Price
To write his novels about cops and gang members, writer Richard Price puts himself in the action. Riding with the cops. Touring the projects with a drug dealer. Price helped write Obama's favorite TV show "The Wire," and several movies including "The Color of Money." Richard Price joins us today.
The cheery women responsible for everything...
Did this make the rounds?
"The cheery women responsible for everything from packaging the vinyl to drying the round labels that go in the middle of each record bustle to and fro between packing cases, box sets and piles of LPs."

Big Star story and "...how the Beatles Destroyed Rock & Roll..."
PART 1: Big Star. I am never bored when they drag out the same-old power pop records. It only makes my problem worse.
Anyway, this (previously publishded) is a good primer on the topic and more of the Big Star story than I have previously read. (Disclosure: I've not read the Radio City 33 1/3 book)

Looking back at stubs and scanning your noggin...which band/performer have you seen 6 or more times?
(Roadies, publicists, and label people -- please make note to avoid raised eyebrows)

I may have some from the first list mis-categoriezed--apologies Mrs. O'Reiley.

Know a junkie in Seattle?
I've been buying records for 30 years and have never seen quite this...and I may be crucified by my local wax heads...but here goes...
A fantastic collection (6000+) of pre-1980s vinyl LPs went on sale this past week. Remarkable are the quantities and titles of sealed copies. Thousands of pieces from the UK.
Want to own all the Dr. Feelgood or Brinsley Schwarz or Everly Brothers? How about 200+ Elvis Presley long players? Savoy Jazz compilations, Rockabilly city, Small Faces in shrink? Country rekkids preserved like taxidermy? If it isn't sealed, it's likely to have been played once. All the local guys (other shop owners!) have hit it...but it appears that they're not currently interested in Kevin Ayers, Kevin Coyne, Roy Harper, Steve Fromholz, the Dillards, 60's Waylon, Doug Sahm, Flamim' Groovies.... I liberated a pile of Chris Spedding, Brinsley, Terry Reid, Georgie Fame...
Prices are all over the map...but good deals are aplenty.
If nothing else, it's a good reason to e-mail a pal in the Pacific Northwest.
Silver Platters on Queen Anne is the place.
Who is the band in this photo?

I was given this lovely photo by a colleague. He has no idea who it is and kept the photo for the overall quality. The only marking on it is "Steve Wallace 1987 Portfolio Gallery London"
Any ideas?
Now accepting pitches for the FAKE version of The Word
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7725973.stm
1.2mm distributed fake New York Times claiming an end to Iraq and Afgan wars, indictiment of Pres. Bush, CEO maximum wage, and ban on gas-powered vehicles--got me thinking of what might appear on the pages of a fake The Word.

If not the ballad of Gavin & Stacey...what is?
I have returned from the equipment rental shop with a rather large piece of industrial gear...and as i am grinding carpet epoxy off the cement floor it has occurred to me that the lyrics below are the G&S pilot treatment. Then again, there are only 3 screenplay classifications:
1. Boy Meets Girl
2. Good vs. Evil
3. The Journey of Self-Discovery
...and for that matter maybe only 3 song classifications as well, no?
anyhoo....
Don't Stop Believin' by Journey
Just a small town girl, livin in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin anywhere
Just a city boy, born and raised in south Detroit
He took the midnight train goin anywhereA singer in a smokey room
The smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and onStrangers waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people, living just to find emotion
Hiding, somewhere in the nightWorking hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin anything to roll the dice,
Just one more timeSome will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and onDon't stop believin
Hold on to the feelin'
p.s. The lovely GLW Plimsoul argues that the program is more accurately titled Smiffy & Gavin.
