Who else got the Smile Boxset for Christmas?

Apart from the beautiful box, what are your highlights?

The Man in the Blue Shirt

I've been watching clips of Hitch on youtube and noticed that he often wore what looked like a very similar blue shirt to that worn (constantly) by Mark Ellen. I think they are beautiful. Does anyone know where I'd find something similar?

Pleaase don't take this as a disrepectful comment on Hitch's death. I'll add my tribute on the RIP thread.

That Book by Nabakov

Well, is it as good as they say? I've got it lined up next. Is it worth the effort?

ATM: GPS Apps

After getting lost in the Trossachs (add double entendre here)again yesterday, I'm finally going to buy a GPS app for my iphone. Which would you recommend? And do they work even if you can't get a G3 signal? Domestic harmony is depending on your help, guys.

Let's conduct a musical experiment.

For years I've always been secretly impressed by what I thought was an unusual musical gift. We all 'play' music in our heads when there's none on and I noticed that I 'hear' the songs in my head in the same key as the record. However, reading Oliver Sack's Musicophilia, I discover that it's quite common.

"We do, of course, listen selectively, with differing interpretations and emotions, but the basic musical characteristics of a piece - its tempo, its rhythm, its melodic contours, even its timbre and pitch - tend to be preserved with remarkable accuracy."

So let's experiment. First of all we need to select music that we all know so I'd suggest the introduction to the podcast. DON'T LISTEN TO IT YET. Here's what to do:

1. Cue up the podcast but don't start it.
2. Play the theme music it in your head.
3. Start it up and check whether you heard it in the right key.
4. Let me know how it went.

BTW, if it doesn't work, don't blame the guitar player.

A good simple word

And the word is me. No one seems to use it anymore. It's all myself this and myself that. Also us/ourselves. Is it just to make myself or ourselves sound slightly more sophisticated?

Has anyone tried Rock's Back Pages?

The content looks great but it isn't cheap. Is it worth it and did/do you find yourself using it regularly?

Danny Baker and Pat Metheny

It was nice of Danny to pop back over the page to give Pat a shot of his shirt. You wouldn't want to meet Goldie underdressed.

On a Pat matter, legend has it that in the good old days Mojo sent a journo (sorry, Dave) to join the Pat Metheny Group on the road for a few days but the article never appeared. I can imagine that a lack of sex, drugs and (obviously) rock n roll might have made it a bit dull. So what happened and are many articles spiked like that?

Lennon's - may not contain actual John Lennon

There's a pub in Dundee called Lennon's. It's nice. Bands play there like Ringer. They're good too.

Unfortunately a Ms Ono of Upper West Side New York - or solicitors acting on her behalf - have sent the manager a cease and desist letter on the basis that the general public may be under the misimpression that the pub is somehow officially endorsed by 1972's fourth most successful ex-Beatle.

http://www.clashmusic.com/news/yoko-ono-tackles-dundee-pub

Just in case of any doubt, can I make it clear to anyone visiting Dundee that Lennon's pub may have nice photos on the wall of the peacenik who liked a long lie but he won't be behind the bar offering to pull you a pint of 80 shilling. Contain your disappointment fabs fans.

Rock's John the Baptist and Jesus

Just an emerging theory, not blasphemy.

John the Baptist: Travis, Jesus: Coldplay
JTB: Teenage Fanclub, Jesus: Oasis
JTB: Midlake, Jesus: Fleet Foxes
JTB: Pixies, Jesus: Nirvana

What do you think? Any others?

Would any British Football players make it into a World 11?

On Saturday night I was watching MOTD with my daughter (I bribed her with chips) and she asked me who the best player in Britain was. I really struggled before I thought of it this way: would anyone playing in Britain make it into a world 11? The only one that I thought would have a chance is Ashley Cole. What do you think? Crouch for the last 2 minutes?

Songs + Sings + Chops

Another thread motivated me to put this up. I'd been chatting with some mates about what would make the ultimate artist. So I thought it would be this: songwriting + singing + musicianship. I posited some contenders - Todd (met with disdain by mates), Macca (not enough chops?), Prince (worse than Todd).

Anyway the answer is obvious. Isn't it?
