A BIT SCARY

The old adage that Time goes quicker when you are older is becoming true for me and no doubt many others. Whilst listening to an Old Danny Baker show today, he commented on how far away we are now from "Stairway to Heaven " being released.
It goes like this "We are as far away now from Stairway to Heaven as Stairway to Heaven was from The Nazi Night of the Long Knives,Hitler becoming Fuhrer, The Birth of Henry Cooper and Stanley Matthews making his England debut "
I added 3 of those for emphasis.
Here's another.
We are as far away from "Gangsters" by The Specials as "Gangsters" was from Nat King Cole's "Mona Lisa", Clement Atlee becoming Prime minister and The First Published Peanuts cartoon.
I think it was David Hepworth who mentioned in a recent podcast that Clapton was only 25 when he recorded "Layla". It's these kind of facts that put my head in a spin.
Anyone else want to play the "As far away as " game or any weird time related things.

NOT AS GOOD AS I REMEMBER

The joys of the internet are many. The near instant access to stuff is a godsend. So the other day i was thinking of songs i used to love and hadn't heard for years and thought of The Icicle Works-Understanding Jane.
I remember it as a real hard rocking number and really loving it when it was released. On to Youtube i go and there it is. It starts in a very Jesus and Mary Chain way and then, well,it goes a bit flat for my tastes. Now this isn't a case of my tastes changing, which they do of course, It's just that i remembered it in a different way. I suppose this happens all the time with all things,Books, films etc. So my question is, Tell me something you went back to and were disappointed to find it wasn't as good as you remember ?. Old TV shows are the one that most spring to mind. The Sweeney is very slowly paced and ther isn't that much action. Not how it is remembered at all. Still great though
You be the Judge with The Icicle Works

WHY DID THEY DO THAT ?

This has probably been done before but what the hell.
Great records that are ruined in some way by a Guitar solo,Crap backing vocals, kids singing,Rick Parfitt, You get the idea.
I'll start.
This great pop song by The Lemonheads is totally ruined by the Whistling bit.
oK YOUR TURN

Richard Thompson Cornucopia

Knew that would get your attention. OK RT fans here's the deal.
In exchange for giving you this link i'm allowed to Make fun (Real ale, Arran sweaters, Beards-ironic) for a month without payback.
And i'm allowed to say that "I Want to See The Bright lights Tonight " is not the greatest album ever made and that music did continue after it was released. DEAL ???

Enjoy your part, I will mine

WHEN IS A FAN NOT A FAN ?

Two things got me thinking about this. The "What is music ?" Discussion on the Podcast and Buscuitbuscuit's post on my "The Band,The Song" post, where he asks "Am I the only THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS fan here ? "
Now I like some of there stuff, mostly what I hear on Danny Baker but i think "Alphabet lost and found" is So bad Jamiroquai is thinking of doing a cover for his "Now that's what I call S****" album.
So I thought about Bruce Springsteen. Now I have and like about 50% of his Albums, Does this make me a fan ? Do i Consider myself a Fan ? or do you have to like 75%, or more, of someones' output to call yourself a fan ?
Would you ever say "I'm a fan of ...... " I know someone who is Very big in The Mixmag Demographic who used to say They were a Massive King Crimson fan and when i asked if he actually liked "Lark's Tongue In Aspic " he said " Never Heard of it"
Ditto "Lizard". You Might be big in Prog House Mate But Prog Rock I don't think so
Be interested to hear what other people think. Especially people who claimed to be massive fans but only know one song or one album. We've all met them.
Or what is your defintion of "A Fan "

THE BAND-THE SONG

Whilst listening to an Old Danny Baker show today,He had some guy reciting "Motorhead" by Motorhead and then played "In a Big Country" by Big Country. This got me thinking about Eponymous song titles.
Obviously Album titles are a given but what about Song Titles ?
Off the top of my head i came up with these

Bo Diddley-Bo Diddley
Madness- Madness
Talk Talk-Talk Talk
Minor Threat-Minor Threat
Living in a box-Living In A Box
Body Count- Body Count
Black Sabbath-Black Sabbath
I think there was one by Anthrax but i can't remember the Title.
C'mon Word Bloggers there must be a Ton more ?

Yes RT fans it's those things the kids play with when they really should be listening to "I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight" instead.

This excellent blog has compiled all the Original versions of songs Gram and cohorts covered on "Safe at Home","Sweetheart of The Rodeo" and The Flying Burrito Brothers albums.
It's also full of other great music too.
Got my copy of the new "Word" today. I too like the Lemmy interview(See other thread)

How come I've never heard that before ?

Been a fan of Slade since i was a Nipper and i've heard "Far Far Away" hundreds of times but can't remember hearing the Third line before. Or maybe i've only just understood it.
Any other examples of Lyrics suprising in you in songs you've heard more times than you care to mention.? also how did it get passed the BBC censor ?.Maybe the same bloke who did "Walk On The Wild Side "

"I've seen the yellow lights go down the Mississippi
I've seen the bridges of the world and they're for real;
I've had a red light off the wrist without me even gettin' kissed
It still seems so unreal."

Trivia time again

due to the success of my Footy trivia questions. someone(My brother) send me these based on Word Favourite Nick Lowe.
How can you go from Nick Lowe to Deepak Chopra in 4 moves or less ?.
How can you go from Nick Lowe to Robbie Williams in 4 moves or less ?
The one move you can't use is "Lived in LA or London etc" apart from the last Robbie one,They are all connected by people.
There are probably various answers but i'll post the ones i was sent.
Personally i got the second one and on the first one i was on the right path(To enlightenment ?) but needed a little wiki help to complete it.
I've asked the guy who does these to come up with an RT one. That should get me back in the good books.

TRIVIA Quiz

Just done a great trivia quiz, Here are some of the better questions.
1) What connects Eric Idle,David Coleman,Kevin Rowland and Robert Plant ?
2) What song/tune connects WBA,Wolves and Chelsea ?
3) Name all the groups who have had top ten hits whose names are the same as a Football League club's Nickname ? (for example The Red Devils-Man Utd). careful one of them is difficult.

Can You Like Both ?

During an Interview with The Wire Actor Seth Gilliam(Ellis Carver). DJ Colin Murray claimed The Wire was the antidote to 24,
but that it was possible to like them both. (I DO,The Wire more than 24 it must be said). He went on to say "It's not like Dylan and Young".
Now does he mean you can't like Bob Dylan and Neil Young ? or what point is he trying to make here.
Now i'm not the World's biggest Dylan fan but i really like Neil Young. What i want to know is how many of you like Both ? and What other acts do you think "It's impossible to like both " or The combination of acts that people are most suprised by in Your Musical taste.
Slayer and Hank Williams for me ,love them both. For some people this is very strange indeed.
It's Neil Young day on The Blog it seems.
