The Calm Before the Storm

Photobucket

The recent book-of-the-doc George Harrison: Living In the Material World has a couple of photos of George's visit to see his sister Louise in the USA in late 1963. Of course, by then the Fabs were H-U-G-E in the UK, but they meant nothing in America and it's striking to notice how, even in a tourist hotspot such as Staten Island, no-one is paying the slightest bit of attention to him, not even to his comparatively odd appearance.

A mere couple of months later however, the whole country would fall to the Beatles and young American men would desperately be trying to grow and comb their hair forward like those weird-looking guys with the strange accents that, suddenly, all the girls seemed to like...

No More, No More, No More...

Surprised no-one's mentioned that Andrea True has died (still, based on recent issues, maybe she'll get a double-page obit in the mag).

She did this: -

"They're only the band the Beatles could have been!"

A recent comment on Another Thread caused me to wonder about music fans who appreciate one single aspect of an artist's career, but in an inverse of the prevailing view, e.g. preferring Wings to the Beatles.

I suppose there must have been fans of the Style Council who never cared for the Jam and those who liked Robbie Williams but wouldn't have been seen dead listening to Take That, etc.

So, will any of you happily confess to a similarly topsy-turvy view of the musical world?

Odd That This Story Hasn't Been Posted Yet...

"I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40bn in the bank, to right this wrong," Jobs told Isaacson. "I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."

'Steve Jobs swore to destroy Android'

Even for the head of an organisation with a history of control-freakery such as Apple, this statement is shockingly Bond-villainesque in its levels of megalomania and paranoia...

What's Wrong With Being Sexy?

The GOS revival which is currently sweeping the nation reminded me that he once recorded this tripe.

What other examples of shameless sexism lurk in artists' catalogues?

The Greatest Guitarist Never Mentioned On These Boards...

...(and, now that I *have* mentioned them, surely the greatest guitarist *ever* mentioned on these boards...) played on this:-

(Vince Taylor & His Playboys - Brand New Cadillac)

...and, if that wasn't enough, they also play on this:-

(Johnny Kidd & The Pirates - Shakin' All Over)

Their name? Joe Moretti.

Is there anyone else with such a great legacy based on (comparatively) so little?

Popstars In WW2 Dramas

Yes, yes, we all know about John Leyton appearing in The Great Escape and Apache Indian in Schindler's List, but it also turns out that Kevin Rowland was in Colditz - who knew?

Good to see that he kept his Brummie accent and carried-on with the Dexys exercises while he was in there...

'The Greatest Club Side Ever'

Don't worry, this isn't a(nother) football thread - well, not really...

I managed to miss this BBC 5 Live programme when it was transmitted recently: I don't suppose any of you have got a soundfile of it and, if so, are willing to share it?

Thanks.

Where's That Thread...

...where Fraser was asking us what other mags we read? I only saw it yesterday after I'd logged out and I'd like to contribute, but I'm buggered if I can find it.

Close... But: No to Completism!

Mention of Salad on a recent thread reminded me that I have all their records (7", 12", CD1, CD2 etc), everything that is, apart from their second and final album, Ice Cream, which I couldn't afford at the time and haven't got around to finding since.

In this age of exhaustive boxsets and easily-available downloads, I consider such anti-completism to be perversely admirable, so I'd like to ask you if there are similarly any artists whose entire recorded output you own apart from just one release or track and you're really not that bothered about it.

Snooker Is Dead - Official

If, like me, you were unfortunate enough to see any of the abomination that is 'Power Snooker' on ITV4 yesterday, I sympathise - if you managed not to see it, I deeply envy you.

I like snooker. It's a game of tactics and skill where, played at its best, a period of defensive cushion play can be as thrilling as a 147 break, if not more so - just like sometimes a game of football which finishes 0-0 can be more intriguing and captivating than a 3-0+ drubbing.

'Power Snooker', as far as I can tell, shares none of those attributes. It seems to be snooker for an audience which can neither appreciate nor understand snooker, a game which has been designed to obliterate the very element which gives the game proper its name - snooker for a Sky Sports darts-watching audience, if you will.

When Barry Hearn took over the sport, I immediately feared that he'd eventually ruin the game (favouring his 'boys'; crassly exploiting the commercial side of the sport; marginalising free-to-air broadcasters with an eventual aim of moving the prestigious tournaments to pay-TV, just like he did with darts) but the speed with which a previously classy and gentlemanly game is moving into the beery, loutish gutter both alarms and appals me.

People You Wish Were On Twitter (But Aren't)

1 - Brian Eno: Who among us wouldn't be interested in finding out what he was up to? I also suspect he'd give Stephen Bleeding Fry a run for his money when it came to attracting followers.

2 - Bob Mortimer: The effortlessly funny half of the partnership. Twitter needs him, if only to save us from all the comedy panel show landfill on there.

Erm, that's it.

Any other suggestions?

Confectionery Confusion Calamity

(The antithesis of DogFacedBoy's 'Small Victories' thread...)

While buying the latest issues of two rival music mags this afternoon, I thought I'd treat myself to a Drifter chocolate bar - only on opening it did I realise that I'd meant to buy a Cadbury's Twirl.

Has anyone else ever had their day ruined by a sweet-based mix-up?

Shelagh Take a Bow

Great episode of Monitor about Shelagh Delaney on BBC Four last night - must-see for anyone interested in the influences of both the Smiths and Morrissey: -

"...and this, is me"

Time was when light-entertainment personalties and other minor celebrities used to have a go at a bit of 'serious' singing: were any of those songs ever any good?

To start you off, here's a cracking tune from Mike Reid.
