From Guardian.
None of 'em are British. Maybe our lot were bunking off.

Music. There's no money in it. Apparently there is.
The Rolling Stones, for example, gigged throughout the 1960's, many months of the year from here to Australia and back, released a hit single almost every other month, released two albums plus compilations and EP's per year for a few years, then at the end of the decade discovered they were skint and later had to leave the country for tax reasons.
Adele, has released two albums, half a dozen singles, and played half a dozen gigs, and yet has reached the Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated fortune of 20 million of the Queen's finest.
With the royalty rate from an MP3 about 7% how do these artists manage to make so much money so quickly.
Nick Drake
If there are any fans in the Massive I thought I'd post this, I discovered it only recently. I first heard Nick Drake's music over thirty years ago, and to find a 'new' recording by him, albeit of an already released song, has freaked me out (scuse the dated parlance). I am biased as I am a fan. But on all accounts it is quite wonderful.
Book Club (not Oprah) recommendation:
I recently discovered this book, as below. Highly recommended A to Z reference/encyclopedia typemungus thing of famous, not so famous and downright obscure 60's bands. Well researched, loads of pics.

Top Five Lists
Gear needed for fishing trip on Saturday
To-Do
Things I forgot to do yesterday
People to invite for a barbie
Led Zeppelin
Now it's personal.
In light of recent band classic threads: yes Brown Sugar should be on the greatest hits but what songs do you REALLY like, especially the obscure ones which are just as darn tootin as the hits. I'll get us started:
Stones:
Everything Is Turning to Gold. Some Girls b-side
Fancyman Blues. Steel Wheels b-side blues
Miss You (extended versh)
Jump On Top of Me (Voodoo Lounge b-side)
Empty Heart (5 by 5 EP)
Zep:
Poor Tom Coda/ Zep III out-take
Traveling Riverside Blues.
I Can't Quit You Baby - Royal Albert Hall soundcheck/Coda
Thank You - BBC Sessions
Dancing Days - How The West Was Won.
You what? A rant.
In today's Evening Standard a critic, by the name of David Smyth, mentions that Bobby Womack is recording a new album. Said critic writes that Bobby Womack is making a solo record 'after regaining hipness from his appearance on the Gorillaz album.' Ahem. Excuse me. Since when and at what point was Bobby Womack not 'hip', which star chamber decided this, and does anyone think that a soul legend with 50 years in the business needs Damon Albarn to restore his street credibility?
Grrrrrr....
Extraneous Non-Musical Song Noises (excuse for thread)
During Man U/Athletic Bilbao commentary I heard an old-fashioned phone ringing in the background, which made me think.
For starters, I've got Bowie's 'Life On Mars' and Zep's 'The Ocean' with phones ringing in background. Anybody have anything else with superfluous dogs barking, engineer shouting, tea lady chatting during recording of song..
The Nigel Tufnell School of Rock Stars Who Once Read A Newspaper.
Roger Waters in recent press conference when asked for his views on the Falklands: 'I'm ashamed as I possibly could be of our colonial past, when we were out raping and plundering and stealing" (I think that line is actually from a Bad News song about the Vikings).

Sinead O'Connor
appearance on the Friday night edition of the Graham Norton show. After the previous few months of erotic fruit based blogs and disastrous Las Vegas weddings I anticipated hiding behind the sofa when she appeared. Well. Who else sings like her? Nobody. Wonderful.
The Douglas Adams book
'The Meaning of Liff' has been twitterfied.
