Mr Richards & Louis Vuitton

Prompted by the letter in this months mag and Mr Hepworth's stout response, I still can't get over the ad with Keef and Louis Vuitton. It's nothing to do with his right to advertise or not. He has every right to do what he wants to do as have I to ignore it.

I just think he looks odd and creepy. I wonder what on earth Louis Vuitton thinks he is adding to their brand values? He is hardly an aspirational figure to their target consumers surely?

Made me smile - Ken Lee

Great Lyricists of our time

Listening to the new Chris Difford album on the way into work this morning reminded me of how few really good lyricists there are out there.

He manages to engage me immediately because I am interested in what is happening in the song. There are lyrics that make you smile and songs that bring tears to my eyes but my attention is grabbed. Then you start to pick out the melodies and arrangements.

So my vote goes to Mr Difford - who do you rate and why?

Richard Thompson - Beginners Guide

As the earlier blog entry which had some recommendations on has been deleted, I would be grateful for any RT fans to recommend songs or albums to start. I have an open mind(ish) and I don't recall hearing very much if anything by him.

Thanks in advance.

Who is the most influential artist(s)

Using the new and probably unscientific method of googling the artist name and the word influential and seeing who has the largest number of results.

I'll start with:

"Beatles" + "influential" = 305,000 records

Who is the most overated artist or band?

The mention of Guns and Roses made me consider if they are the most overated band of all time. Obviously a personal one but they join The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Yes and a few others onto the list of bands I just don't get.

There are bands that will get universal derision on these pages (Simply Red anyone?) but there are some bands that just divide opinion. Who is the most overated act of all time?

My vote goes to Guns and Roses (November Rain just tips it for me - horrible).

Morrissey - maybe my parents were right all along.

I have to say that David Quantick's Morrissey greatest hits review was so spot on I read it out loud to my wife. I have been troubled by how little I care about Moz now when The Smiths have always been the most important band to me. I have tried the new albums and have not managed to listen to one all the way through.
He has turned into a miserable Larry Grayson. Maybe my parents were right all along.....

What's worth downloading on eMusic?

I have been subscribing to eMusic for around 6 months and there are some great albums available. However, it requires having a trawl about on the site and it can be a bit hit or miss sometimes.

I have made an assumption that a number of Word readers subscribe so wondered if it was worth sharing what good stuff you have found on eMusic.

My starter(s) for ten would be

Boxer - The National
Alligator - The National
Ash Wednesday - Elvis Perkins
Ma Fleur - Cinematic Orchestra
Trials of Van Occupanther - Midlake
Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga - Spoon
The Ideal Condition - Paul Hartnoll
