Ryan Adams & Neal Casal....again!
I was at the last gig of the tour, Glasgow Armadillo - what a lucky girl I am!! Not only did they play a reasonably long set but we also, shock horror, got an encore.Around 2 hours total.
No support but they more than made up for it. Neal even did a lead vocal - awesome - he'll have gained some new fans from that I'm sure.
Ryan was in witty top form, he handled the hecklers (unusual for a Glasgow crowd - usually well behaved if rowdy!). For some reason, a few attention seekers felt the need to holler between songs. Ryan calmly assured them that all he heard was blah, blah, blah. At one point he insisted that he was busy & could they 'text him after the show', and 'shhh, my boss is coming'! Amusing. Very.
His reticence (last time I saw him) had gone, relaxed, witty & never faulted. Did I REALLY put him in my 'over rated' contribution. Wash my mouth out with soap & water!
Don't ask me for a set list, I'm pants at stuff like that. He really jams out which makes it hard for a fan once removed (other half is the fan who buys every release)like me to recognise stuff.
Still on a high, more than made up for the QOTSA gig I had tickets for that was cancelled on Thursday night! Josh who? Pah!
Ryan Adams vs Neal Casal
Right! Soap box time.
My boyfriend introduced me to both of these artists. From the start I loved Neal with a passion & thought Ryan was over rated & wouldn't give him the time of day. However, with the promise of seeing Neal in Ryans band I went to see Mr Adams live. He rocked, even if he didn't do an encore, but the highlight of the night was still seeing Neal as support aswell as in the band.
Does anyone else feel like me that Neal is one of the unsung stars? He is an awkward performer but has the voice of an angel & writes beautiful songs. To me, although I now quite like Mr Adams, he just isn't the talent that Neal is. I think alot of it is that Ryan acts the star on stage, great presence & confidence, which Neal seems to lack.
I am going, yet again to see Ryan Adams, with the lure of Casal supporting (I hope!).
ps Jeff Hill, bass player in Hazy Malaze (band Neal is/was in) now seems to carved himself a career in Rufus W's set up. One of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet.I wish they'd get togethr again soon with that barm pot drummer!
Discovered too late....
Is it just me or do I discover people when it is too late to see them live?
I discovered Jeff Buckley the year he died. Elliot Smith too. The publicity surrounding artists when they die always creates new fans, but why can't the industry plug these fantastic talents harder when they are still around? I feel resentful & sad & not getting to see these & many other artists.
Plus, it is their estate, not them, that benefits from me going into a spending frenzy.
So, who do you wish you had seen live? My list of artists before my time is long & could not change anyway, its the ones I missed out on that were around & just not paraded around enough that hacks me off.
