(films) Soul Power and The Hippie Temptation
I saw recently two films that I doubt are in UK multiplex release , the older one in particular , and they're both Our Music-related , so.........
Jeffery Levy-Hinte's
SOUL POWER!
www.soulpowerfilm.com
and the 1967 CBS Reports documentary ( no " director " credit on its IMDB listing )
THE HIPPIE TEMPTATION .
The latter is the real odd one , a 1967 contemporary CBS news documentary about the Summer Of Love/Haight-Asbury hippie heydey made at the time - and demonstrating a fairly cynical , not to say jaundiced , not to say alarmist or sensational , attitude towards the New Youth .
I was shown it in middle school in 1973 as an anti-drugs/running away scare film , and the print I saw bore a credit for a vintage school films distribution service...
LSD and the alleged " chromosonal damage " caused by it is much discussed . That only drug thus mentioned .
The 1967 hippies look , even if barefoot , rather neater/more " hipster/beatnik/college student/backpacker " , perhaps , -dressed and haircutted then one's sterotype of " H-A hippie " might lead to a mental picture of-Of course , it's 1967 and such styles hadn't really tricked down to the masses yet , not to mention that they hadn't had time to grow their hair !th
Oh , and the Grateful Dead , " a hard rock combo " , are in it , interviwewed by the CBS long-timer who hosts it , also walking through the streets of the Haight-Asbury ( Where the theater I saw it at is !!! ) , looking rather like John Updike...And , the Dead do one more-or-less full number , a garagey version of " Dancing In The Street " , live in a park .
Someone else at the theater thought that he might be shown as an infant , along with his mother , in a few frames of the sequences of the CBS guy walking through the Haight ( I suppose old US TV anchorpersons mean little here , so I've left his name off , but I suppose that if I wrote Harry Re- um , that guy's name , it would save more space . ) !
At one point some hippie-person is reading a comic book , cover folded over ( Shame ! Well , I guess he was non-materialistic...) , which looks rather like a Steve Ditko page...Ironic , that , I suppose...( Ditko was Not Too Fond of late-60s " hip/with-it "-ness/its politics . )
Returning to Soul Power , I put these incredibly clever tag terms ( Sez I . ) upon my posts that most of you will never see , but believe me , there is one scene that earns the film's PG-13...She might not be a Scot , but...Rhymes with " moonbang " ( Perhaps . ) , say...
I suppose the performances in Soul Power are good , but , maybe they're not " great "...Perhaps that contributed to the films' decades-long binning...Some incredible 1970s clothing style statements , onstage and off- , of course...Was this the last time people were " non-selfconsious " about their clothes , without droogs/scmucks like we/me and style magazines commenting ???!!???!!?
Absolute Beginners
The 1984 film of " Absolute Beginners " is showing , on a revival double-bill , here in S. F. this coming week , and I hope to go .
I remember the publicity about the film in the British press at the time of its making and release , it was going to " show the connection between the vibrant style culture of 80s London and its swinging , jazz-oriented , roots " . Then it flopped . Big-time .
If I'm not mistaken .
Nice title song , however:-) .
Dear David Hepworth:
......FWIW* , just in case no-one sent you a correction on this , regarding your " When Did We Get So Mean ? " piece of some months back , IIRC** you gave a false credit to the female relative of a US Roosevelt President to whom a certain phrase is popularly credited , and , FTM*** , got the nature of her relationship wrong as well$$ !
The female to whom:
" If you've got nothing good to say about anyone , come over here and sit by me . "
is popularly credited is Alice Roosevelt Longworth , first-born and daughter of Theodore ( Teddy ) Roosevelt , not Eleanor Roosevelt , FDR$'s First Lady .
It's a saying I particularly treasure , so...
Obviously , maybe someone got this to you already , I just did mean to write it for a while...
When I wrote in to Another UK Rock Mag at about that time regarding a track on their freebie CD being not the version of the song ( By a first-generation R'n'R Great ) that their credits indicated but a later version - A polite , pleasant , letter . - I never received any acknowledgement from them , so perhaps i was afraid of disturbing the Special Relationship at that point , ahehhehhehheh.........
*-For What It's Worth
**-If I Recall Correctly
***-For That Matter
$-Franklin Delano Roosevelt , 32d President of the United States of America - he preferred it to be pronounced " Rose-velt " , incidentally .
$$-" Got the nature of the true one's relationship wrong as well " , I should have said , in fact...I was " showing off " a little to much here . I guess . Perhaps Hemingway's ( Ernest , American writer . ) advice to " kill your children " should've been heeded here ?
John Updike ?????????
Has WORD written about John Updike since his death earlier this year ?
I'm not able to get every issue .
( I remember how Word used to give a bit more space to books , even " not directly ' rock'n'roll ' ones " , than it does now - Ah ,well !!!!!!!!! )
I suppose Updike , both in his image/look and actual age , as well as the general subject matter of his writings , was I suppose not the most obviously " wock'n'woll " Keef/Bukowski clone type - I'm just asking !!!!!!!!!
I read a piece by Julian Barnes about Updike at New York Review Of Books to-day , that reminded me of this...I'd meant to write Word about it before...
Welsh documentary ?
What was the documentary about life in a seaside Welsh village that was covered in the Island Records-cover issue of WORD recently ?
I can't remember its title just now .
