condiments and preserves

whilst listening to the podcast on the Northern Line, it occurred to me that we could probably set the dining table from breakfast, right through to high tea and dinner by inviting the great and the good of the music world.

The podcast started me off with talk of The Jam, which brings us nicely to Marmalade or indeed the Honeyz if that's how you like your toast? If we extend it out a bit further, then every meal could benefit from some Salt-n-Pepa but what else are we missing? I'd like to think the world of folk can deliver some groups that embrace the chutneys, relishes and pickles...feel free to put something on the table...

the show mustn't go on...

Returning from seeing Mozza at the Roundhouse last night, it occurred to me that contrary to the old adage, sometimes the show really shouldn't go on...

Now don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the old chap and have many fond memories of doing my paperound whilst the rain fell "hard on a humdrum town" (contrived attempt to work in relevant lyric - apologies) but last night he just wasn't very good. Yes, he postures, he pouts and he kneels reverentially in front of the drum kit but it was all a bit...well a bit average really...a bit flat. I appreciate that you can't expect him to play loads of Smiths stuff; if you want the old Smiths stuff then there are plenty of really good tribute acts playing it every weekend. However, he seems to have forgotten that lots of solo Morrissey material is actually quite forgettable. I got the sense that I'd paid to see Morrissey and I mean literally to be in the same room as the enigma that is. The performance seemed secondary.

But here's the thing...if he plays again next year and a mate has got a ticket going spare, will I go to see him? Very probably is the answer. So the question is this, is it possible for an artist/band to have the same hold over you as your favourite football team? Is there a musician that you just go to see time and time again out of pure blind loyalty, knowing full well that they are going through the motions?
