Torres Bounce
Dear Torres
I completely missed your post on the Cheryl Code thread re. apologising for being a bit snippy and Citizen Smithish. I genuinely appreciate it now that, today, I've read it. I too would like to apologise to for having a swipe and dig at you in return. A lot of my posts are extremely tongue in cheek, and this instance it obviously led to a collosal misunderstanding bewtween us. I am a genuine egalatarian by nature, but my sense of humour doesn't always reflect the said tongue in cheek. I suppose that it's easy to assume that people always know where your are coming from, but it isn't always the case.
Anyway, I genuinely hope that you have had a very good Christmas so far, and that it continues as such for next year. I hope this misundersatnding between us can now be forgotten. Love and Peace.
ps: Citizen Smith's ok by me. He was a severe HJH fan, I seem to recall.
pps: the C stands for Corn-Fed. I'm very free range in a don't frighten the horses kind of way. ;-)
Merry Xmas And Goodbye
I've been giving this a lot of thought and I think it may be time for me to move on. I stopped posting for a while due to that notorious thread, and the arrows mallarkey and the anti-Bargepole campaign. That aside, I really feel that the site has changed quite a lot,(and I am not saying for the worst), since my time as a regular reader, and the past six months as a contributor. It's just of a different character. Please do not mistake this as being a criticism, it is not. It has always been a broad church, and all the better for it, and long may it continue as such, but I cannot really contribute anymore. This is not meant as a criticism at all, and it is entirely down to me.
My views on the X Factor, Cowell, Famous Friends etc are entirely negative and not worth posting really as I have nothing to say etc.
Thanks to the Fraser and the team, and everyone that has and does contribute. Have a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year.
And you thought McCartney's was bad...
Crikey, and I thought that that Les Gray being over familiar with a ventriloquist's doll was deeply disturbing..
At least I didn't post The Eagles 'Please Come Home For Christmas'
as well. There's only so much effluvia one can take.
Peter Cook at Christmas
I found this and I just have to share it with you. I missed it first time around. Wonderful stuff.
Enjoy !
Dylan - Radio Hour Volume 1
I got hold of this 4 cd set from my local Library yesterday. I didn't get to hear much of the actual series, only snippets, but what an absoulutely wonderful collection this is. I'm flabbergasted. Every single track is a classic and hits you instantly. My two favourite compilations so far are Chess Pieces and The Legendary Story Of Sun Records. I now have a Holy Trinity with 'Radio Radio'. If you like the real classics and marvellous curios from the past, this is a Motherlode. Stunning.
12 Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus
It doesn't get much better. Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Stand Out Lines
What single great lines or phrases come walloping out of a song for you ? 'the pump don't work 'cause the vandals took the handles','ice blue', 'and I curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid get','shot billiards with a midget till the rain stopped'
'antiques, everyone's a sentiment, an antique'.... or perhaps 'partly fish, partly porpoise, partly baby sperm whale'.
Wi - Fi Security Help
I had been planning to spend a couple of months in Eire and doing a bit of travelling as well, but unfortunately this fell through. For this purpose I was going to purchase a portable laptop pc. However, I was informed by a few individuals that due to this Wi-Fi connection business, my security would be greatly compromised by people lurking in the ether looking for the Wi-fi signals and hitching a lift, so to speak. I still want to investigate portable options, so could some tech. savvy person advise me on the best options ? It would be very appreciated.
Edgar Broughton Band / MC5
I have recently discovered the music of the Edgar Broughton Band and MC5, via two compilations,'Out Demons Out' and 'The Big Bang' respectively. Stunning. I was aware of them but never got round to actually hearing them and they're marvellous. It is fantastic to make such fresh discoveries, so I'm on a bit of a roll at the moment. If anyone has any further recommendations in this vein it would be greatly appreciated.
Anything new that blew ?
After spending a couple of weeks floating semi-lotus in the astral pre-waking foetal bliss that is Qunitessence, my sciatica was buggered. Therefore, I needed to boogie. Loud. And Strut. I then discovered the MC5 properly, and the wonderful Edgar Broughton Band ( how had I not heard this before ?!) How about you? Anything at all catch you unawares and do the gris gris trick ? TV wise it was The Thick Of It. Never seen it before. Excellent in every way.
American Comedy Help
I was talking to a colleague about recent comedy programmes and I'm trying to identify one which they are unaware of. I don't watch much TV at all really (but not in some pseudo-intellectual Radio 4 way) mainly my dvd collection and the odd documenatry and Newsnight etc. on I Player mainly, but about a year or so ago I caught about five minutes of an American comedy that seemed to be set in the deep south and it appeared to be about some fellow trying to sort out his karma, which I thought was a pretty novel idea for a comedy. I only caught a snippet and it appeared to be very funny. My colleague doesn't seem to know what I'm talking about. Does anyone know what it was called, and was it as good as the brief bit I saw seemed to suggest ?
Quintessence
I am a huge Mahavishnu head, and adore John McLaughlin's Shakti. I've come across references to Quintessence on various threads, and I think they'd boil my kettle alright. I know that Colin H is an admirer of theirs, and if a fellow MO fan recommends, I shall follow, but where to start? Any advice re. Quintessence from those in the know would be greatly appreciated.
The First Of Their Kind ?
It is generally acknowledged that the first Bebop record was Woody 'n' You by Coleman Hawkins, the first Rock and Roll record was Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston(Ike Turner) and his Delta Cats, and Miles Davis Birth Of The Cool was indeed what it proclaimed.
However, was Bob Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone the first Rock single ?
Was The Byrds version of Mr. Tambourine Man the first Folk/Rock recording ? Did Prog really have it's roots In Sgt. Pepper, and can the beginning of punk be sourced to the first Stooges album ? The consensus is usually in the affirmative, but what I find interesting is what were the precursors of these musical ground shifts, and how styles morph, sometimes symbiotically, sometimes in drastic reaction etc. Are there any new musical directions left, or has it all been done ? Was Bob Dylan the first Rap Artist ?
Editing
Fraser, is there way of editing a comment re. typos etc. without it effecting the overall thread i.e. giving the impression that a new entry has been posted. I am a bit sausage fingered when it comes to the keyboard and quite often spot errors after the event and would like to be able correct them without disturbing the ebb and flow.
