Attention Nerds!
Just found this online, http://mixonline.com/classic-tracks/, it's all the 'Classic Tracks' articles that Mix magazine have printed. The articles give a bit of background info on the track, and then explain how it was recorded and what was used. All very 'trainspotter' I know but I love these things, and thought that they might be of interest to others! Apologies if this has been covered already.
CD Player Distortion
I have a Phillips CD 713 cd player that I'm having trouble with, at least I think it's the cd player! When I play certain cds (most recently Weller's 22 Dreams, and John Grant's Queen Of Denmark) they sound distorted. They sound fine if I play them on my macbook through the same hi-fi speakers, sound fine in the car, and on my daughter's cheap Sony hi-fi. My turntable and tuner also sound fine, and a lot of my cd's as well. Is this a problem with the cd player or cds? Do I need to get a new player? (I got this one second hand)
Before I Beat Airport Express To Death...
can anyone help?! I've been trying for the last 3 hours to set it up properly, but no joy. I connected it via ethernet to my router, set it up and (just as I was told to do!) unplugged it, took out the cable, put in the connection from my stereo and plugged it in and.........nothing! Doesn't work, the Macbook can't find it, and neither can Airfoil. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Is it something really simple? I've been on countless forums but I still can't get the damn thing to work!
Old MP3 Player Help!
I broke my Ipod before Christmas, I left it on top of the car, drove off, and later found it in two pieces on the road! So, as I can't afford a new one for a while I'm back using my old Creative Zen Nx 30 GB. I use XNJB for Mac to transfer the music, but it only seems to want to accept mp3's. I have a load of music in aac format and, before I convert it all, does anyone know of anyway that I can get the Zen to play aac files? I tried searching online but found nothing.
Skype Help!
This might seem like a strange help request, but I really need help with Skype! I'm using a macbook and have the latest version of Skype, but the call quality is still terrible! I've tried adjusting sound settings on Skype and macbook, and tried calling landlines as well as other Skype users, but the quality is either crap or else the other person can't hear me! I've looked for answers on forums, but everything I've tried has failed. Help!!
Electronic Recommendations?....
Just like Stimpy on his recent thread 'Have I had My Fill Of Pop Music', I'm experiencing a feeling of 'meh' when it comes to most of the music I have in my collection! This includes lots of Jazz, Rock, Pop, and Classical. The only music that has interested me in the last few weeks has been Miles Davis' 'In A Silent Way', and the Bill Laswell remix of the same album. So I'm thinking that Electronic music might be a new avenue for me to explore. I tried Allmusic.com for help, but the link comes up as broken on Google searches, so I'm turning to any member of the Massive that might be kind enough to point me in the right direction when it comes to Electronic music?
Anyone else seen this?
I was just reading a blog on the Guardian site that mentioned a new music site called musoc.org. It's a site that seems to want to save Classical music from becoming popular (I could be wrong!), so I clicked on the link and what a read! the FAQ section on pop music is brilliant, http://www.musoc.org/faq.htm. It seems to take itself far too seriously, and looks like it was written by someone in their first year of a music degree (for the first few months of mine I corrected anyone who called it Classical music, the correct term was Western Art Music! I stopped when I realised what a knob I was, and before I got beaten up by mates!), or by someone who was dumped by their other half for a rock musician! I know I shouldn't get annoyed by this stuff, but I haven't had my coffee yet!
40th Birthday Spotify Playlist!
It's my 40th tomorrow so I decided (with a little help from wikipedia!) to compile a playlist of songs from 1969. Also, I have nothing to do before I start teaching so it kills some time! the link is http://open.spotify.com/user/humphreym/playlist/40pZMeDYsvhbCt8hGGYxBe hopefully it works! Feel free to contribute, or ignore!
Podcast Recommendation
I've got a long drive ahead of me tonight and tomorrow, and was wondering if the massive could recommend some good podcasts for me to listen to? My supply of Word (original, and backstage) and Collings And Herring have been used up, so I'm now podcast-less! Any ideas?
Subscriber Cover Letter
Just wondering if the cover letter, written by Mr.H, has been discontinued, or have I just upset someone?!! Haven't got it for the last two issues!
iPlayer help!
Just wondering if anybody knows if the iPlayer radio is offline? Just tried to listen to Tom Robinson's show on 6music but it wouldn't connect. I tried to listen to other stations, and older shows, but no joy! I'm in Ireland, but I'm usually able to listen to live, and old shows!
Cool Websites
Just discovered a cool site that streams live concerts. It's called Wolfgang's Vault (http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/)just click on 'Concert Vault' and you get a ton of live gigs! It requires you to register but it's worth it. The other site I've found (thanks to on of the Word massive!) is Deezer. Excellent site that allows you to stream full albums, and it's completely legal! Anyone got anymore to add?
Illegal downloaders to get warning letter....
Just read this article on the Guardian website http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/jul/24/digitalmedia.piracy. Just wanted to know everyone's thoughts on this move? Is it a step in the right direction or too little too late?
Play Some Old!
I went to see Paul Weller at The Marquee, Cork last night, and it was fantastic. Lots of energy, and Weller really enjoying himself. The crowd loved it, well everyone except my mate! You see, he went with the sole purpose of hearing Weller play some Style Council tunes, and when he got none he was really annoyed.
Now, I had told him that Weller usually doesn't play a lot of stuff from the 80s but this fell on deaf ears. He was of the opinion that people (him mainly) paid a lot of money for a ticket so should get a lot of old hits. I'm of the opinion that I want to hear what the artist is currently doing, and don't really mind if he plays really old stuff!
It obviously helps that I like Weller and know his solo records fairly well, but I still thought that it was unrealistic of my mate to expect him to play a load of Style Council or Jam tunes. Or am I wrong? what does everyone think?
ps. For the record here is a close enough set list to what he played last night.
