How to Choose Your Favourite Album
- Go to a gig in a small sweaty pub holding no more than 60 people on a Bank Holiday Monday.
- Get Robyn Hitchcock to front a cracking 10 piece band including Green Garside and Mark Bedford.
- Assemble an enthusiastic crowd and throw in a few celebs such as Paul Whitehouse, John Hegley and Joe Boyd.
- Get them to run through all of “Revolver” in order with panache, style and humour, highlighting what a fabulous collection of mixed songs it is – even “Yellow Submarine” worked as a jokey sing-along!
- Get them to come back for a rousing series of Bowie songs, along with some more HJH numbers, including “Rain”, Old Brown Shoe” and a brilliant “She’s So Heavy”.
- Finish with an extended version of “All the Young Dudes”.
Conclude:
1) Gigs in pubs are so much better than big arenas
2) Robyn Hitchcock is a seriously under-rated talent
3) “Revolver” is deservedly my favourite all-time album !!
(More details available from DogFacedBoy’s review of Sunday’s show in the “Nights Out” section.)
Georgie Fame
Went to a superbly enjoyable performance by Georgie Fame at Ronnie Scott's last night. A brilliant band in top form running through a wide variety of material in London's best music venue. Georgie himself was in great voice and is a most entertaining story teller and seems to be best mates with all the music greats.
I have just realised that I have only one cd of his in my collection ("The Very Best Of..") Where to next please ??
RT is NOT God Shock !
Having resisted for a while, I finally decided to see what all the fuss is about and bought Richard Thompson's compilation "Action Packed" at the weekend. Five listens later I'm confused....it's good, but it's not great ??
Can you help me buy some new hi-fi equipment ?
A relative has just offered to buy my existing (ancient) hi-fi system from me. I am therefore in a position to buy a complete brand new system. I want a separates system with a cd player, an amp and speakers, and also want to be able to play my Creative Zen through it. Budget is about £1,000. Speakers need to be smallish/bookshelf as it's a small room. I know a lot of you are audiophiles, so would appreciate your advice as to how to go about this. What kit would you recommend ? Where would you suggest I buy it from - I live in west London, but all the shops seem to be either very low end, or incredibly high-end. What percentage of my budget should I allocate to each component ? Thanks in advance - I'm excited, but aware I really need some help here.
Advice on Headphones
I want to spend up to £100 on some good quality headphones for my beloved Creative Zen. I want over ear headphones, not in-ear, and closed ones I can use at the office/home and on the train/planes without disturbing others. Any advice from the Massive please ?
Weller - Where Next ?
Bit of a late convert to Mr. Weller's solo work. I love Wild Wood and Stanley Street but don't know where to go next. Any help with his other best cds or indeed ones to avoid ?
On a slightly related note......why are Ocean Colour Scene so disliked ?
Danny Baker
Anyone know why Danny Baker has been missing from his Radio 5 and Radio London shows lately ? Is he ill or is it something else ?
Kindle Experience
I am just about to buy a Kindle - as much for the newspaper/magazine possiblities as the books. Do any existing Kindle users have any good or bad experience to share in this area before I go ahead ?
(PS Apple fans - please don't try to persuade me to buy an IPad instead - am 100% not interested.)
Don't You Just Love A Bargain ?
Picked up a pristine shrink-wrapped copy of Fountains of Wayne's "Utopia Parkway" at my local charity shop on Saturday for only 99p. 6 plays later I'm convinced it's my bargain of the year so far - a truly wonderful album. Have any of the Massive picked up any other bargains of late ??
Steve Wynn ???
Have just come across a cracking track called "Amphetamine" by Steve Wynnn and the Miracle 3. Am keen to investigate further but see he has a huge body of work. Can any of the Massive help me with this ? Is his Dream Syndicate work the best place to start ?
Creative Zen MP3
I have run out of space on my two wonderful Creative Zen Vision M's. Am therefore currently considering the Creative Zen X-Fi and the X-Fi2. Any of you have any good or bad experiences of either ?
Coffee machines
Would appreciate your help as I seek to buy a new coffee machine. Budget is £50-£100. I want a machine that makes "real" coffee ie not one that uses the coffee-bag type things. Main requirements are for a machine that is fairly robust, and not too big. Also want the coffee to be hot - previous machines have made a nice tasting drink, but never hot enough. Any ideas please....?
Mark Knopfler's Solo Work
Worthy of investigation ? Where to start ?
What is it with Cinema Goers today ?
Went to a preview of Jane Campion's "Bright Star" on Tuesday night. The film is great, but the behaviour of the audience was quite unbelievable and really spoilt the experience. It was a small cinema - absolutely full, and a quiet film. For the first hour, it sounded like 80% of people were eating - mainly noisy popcorn and sweets. Five different mobile phones went off during the film, and half way through two girls started whispering to each other before being told to shut up!
Am I naive to find such selfishness utterly unacceptable ? I'm no old fogey, but am increasingly finding this "f**k everbody else" mentality very depressing. Is it just me ?
MP3 Earphones
I want to upgrade my earphones for use on my beloved Creative Zen Vision M. My key wants are : good bass, comfort, robustness, and good noise isolation in and out ( I don't want people on the train to have to hear what I'm listening to!) Any thoughts on good/bad products around the £50/75 mark ?
