Soupytwist Mr Preview

So, I've chickened out of surprising my FPO with her "significant age" birthday present and asked her if she would like a digital piano. That way she gets to choose exactly what she wants and we satisfy our age old desire to have a piano in the house.

As ever, I turn to the massive for guidance in such matters for when I am asked my opinion. Yamahas always get a good write up but what is the difference between the Clavinovas and the cheaper Arias? My wife is mindful of a budget but I would rather get something that will grow with her. She's a lapsed player but a natural so I think she'll progress pretty quickly.

Over to you.

Word Massive Tech Support Question

Ok, hoping you can help with this one.

I use the Twitter for iPhone app on my iPhone4 (I know, get me, eh!). Recently, whenever I tap on a YouTube link within a tweet the Twitter for iPhone app takes me to the full website version of YouTube instead of the mobile version. A friend of mine uses the same phone and Twitter for iPhone app and he always ends up at the mobile version of You Tube.

The problem is of course that the full website version of You Tube uses Flash which is pointless for iPhones

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Sonny & The Sunsets

Saw San Francisco's Sonny & The Sunsets at the Cockpit in Leeds last night. They describe themselves as garage pop and I think it's a fair description. Anyway, I really enjoyed them, more so as I was actually there to see another band. They played good noisy tunes and they were very tight. A real joy to hear.

Reason I mention them is that I noticed they are appearing at Word Tower's local The Lexington on Monday night. If you are nearby then I'd urge you to go and see them.

That's all.

Moving on old magazines

So, with a house move imminent the elephant in the loft rears it's, err, trunky head..... magazine back issues.

Over the past few years I have managed to curb my hoarding a bit but I still have the first hundred odd issues of Empire magazine dating back to 1989 and every issue of Word. Mrs eddie isn't forcing the disposal of them but I think this would be a good opportunity to finally move them on, especially as we have loads of kids stuff to take with us this time.

eBay has worked occasionally but I think it's very time consuming and the changes to postal rates have made it uneconomical.

So, does the Massive have any suggestions for what I can do with them, or where they can usefully go? Or are they bound for the recycle bin...?

You say bark, I say bite

I'm thinking of buying my first bike for over 25 years. Things seemed to have changed. It was all 12 speed gears, GT handlebars, razor thin tyres and equally thin saddles when I was last in the market for one. Now it all seems to be mountain, hybrid, hardtail. . . .

So, can the Word Massive point me in the right direction?

I'm looking for something that I can pootle around on residential streets (to the shops etc), along cycle paths at the local park with my daughter (I'm fed up running to keep up with her!), the local canal towpath and maybe slightly more adventurous local cycle paths in the future. I may even commute occasionally if I'm brave.

My limited research has so far concluded the following

- Go to a bike shop not Asda
- Make sure you get the right size frame (top bar measurement)
- Test ride some bikes if you can
- Giant, Kona and Trek are reputable brands.

I have about £300 to spend. Any recommendations? How much should go on the bike, how much on accessories, helmet, lock, etc?

Word Towers

So, I'm on the train for one of my infrequent trips down to the big smoke 'on business'. I've just realised that the walk to and from my destination takes me past the doors of Word Towers. What does one do in such situations? I can't just walk past, surely! Is it sad to take a picture?

IPod woes

As my calls to reinstate Dr Digital remain unanswered I turn to the massive for advice.

My 80Gb iPod Classic is about 2 years old. For most of its life it has sat in a dock in a constant charged or charging state. However after about 6 months of ownership I noticed that the battery would have discharge if it was off the dock for 24 hours or so, even if the battery level was previously showing as high. In typical fashion I ignored the problem as it was mainly used when docked. However I am now starting to use it dock-less so it's starting to annoy.

I'm certain I switch it off properly (holding the play button until the screen goes black) but even in a sleep mode it shouldn't discharge so quickly. I've even put it close to my ear to check if the hard drive is still spinning.

A bit of googling showed that others had a problem with the same model but it was generally put down to a firmware issue which seems to have resolved it for most people. My 3rd party iPod manual also suggested that iPods should be kept on charge where possible, which I do, weeks can go by without it leaving its dock.

I suppose the obvious answer is that the battery is a dud and I can look forward to £50 bill to get it replaced. I just don't want to pursue this if there is another possible solution.

Any thoughts?

Beatles remasters creeping into the shops

I noticed my local Asda had already put some of the HJHs remastered cds on the shelves today. In their chart they have listed, I think, Sgt Pepper ("straight in at no.6!"), Revolver, Rubber Soul, Abbey Road and Past Masters. Sgt Pepper and Revolver were on the shelves.

Anyone bought them yet? What are they like?
