Worst venue in London?

I have to qualify.
Went to the Sheperds Bush Empire last night to see Teenage Fan Club who, I think, were really good.
The venue killed it though.
The sound was diabolical - far to quiet, confined to odd pockets around the venue (I was trying to find a good spot). The sightlines were awful, It was clearly oversold for downstairs as the staircases were packed solid, meaning no access to the bog or bar. Upstairs is like watching a poor quality DVD with hardly any sound.
Its not the first time - Ive seen a few bands there and it is always poor. The only exception being Gillian Welch who, being understated and gentle, suited a sit down in the gods but, rock bands and that place just do not work. Add to that foul drink options and that's it for me. Not again
Contrast with Bush hall round the corner where i saw Hope Sandoval last week. Gorgeous place, perfect size, good acoustics and sight lines .

So...Any takers?

Oh, best venues? For rock bands - never had a bad experience at Kentish Town Forum, love the Rythm Factory in Whitechapel for smaller gigs and Brixton Academy(poor sound) Hammersmith Odeon(downstairs) are ok as far as Enormodomes go.

Grovesnor...

This album came out a couple of days ago and it would criminal if it sank below the 'Word' radar.

Obviously, I know the chap who wrote the article but, the point is, it is so 'Massive' friendly that it should at least have a chance with you lot.

Tonight...

What's the deal?

'I'm a Massive member' T-shirt or signed Dumpy's Rusty Nuts album sleeve under my arm?

How do I/we make ourselves known?

Surely not through introduction and, therefore...SOCIAL INTERACTION?!

The Soundtrack of your life...

Went to see Morricone at the Albert Hall the other night (It's in 'my night out with') and, of course, I have been doing THAT whistle since.
He was introduced as the greatest film composer ever and I got to thinking about what the relationship between the music and the image is. I can think of films that have obviously been enhanced by the soundtrack but, what about ones where it just doesnt work? where the composer is good for the film but the film doesnt cut it. And vice versa. Also music that has been 'bought in' and doesnt work or, again, is too good for the film...

And...any lost gems?

I will chuck some in

'The Life Aqautic' - great soundtrack, average film.

Harold and maude - er...both are great!

There will be blood - Johnny Greenwood doesnt deliver

The Road - Nick Cave doesnt deliver

The Thing - Morricone's music is sublime (although, on one level, I love the film)

Assault on precinct 13 -music great, film average

over to you...

University was never like this for me...

'In early 1971 Sun Ra was artist-in-residence at University of California, Berkeley, teaching a course called "The Black Man In the Cosmos". Rather few students enrolled but the classes were often full of curious persons from the surrounding community. One half-hour of each class was devoted to a lecture (complete with handouts and homework assignments), the other half-hour to an Arkestra performance or Sun Ra keyboard solo. Reading lists included the works of Madame Blavatsky and Henry Dumas, the Book of the Dead, Alexander Hislop's The Two Babylons, The Book of Oahspe and assorted volumes concerning Egyptian hieroglyphs, African American folklore, and other topics.'

Johan Cruyff...

I was thinking about the Terry/Bridge/Ashley Cole thing and all the other tawdry rubbish in footy today.
I dont watch football and cant be bothered about England in the World Cup or anywhere else.

Now...that would not be unusual but for the fact that I was OBSESSED with football as a nipper - used to read 'stats' books under the covers with a torch, played every single possible minute, my grandad used to let me stay up and watch MOTD with him in the 70s.
I played for schools, pub teams, local leagues until I was ...40!

And then...It just...Died.

My idol as a kid (along with Bowie of course) was Johan Cruyff. I watched the world cup in 1974 and the Dutch 'total football' team not only played the game like I had never seen before but, when the camera panned along the line up, they ALL had long straggle cut hair!, sidies!, beards!,beads round there necks!, leather bracelets! socks rolled down and shirts out ! Basically, Kings of Leon ready for a gig.
The defender Ruud Krol was in a rock band!

Cruyff smoked 20 a day when he was playing!

He refused to go to the World Cup in Argentina (which Holland would surely have won, they lost in the final) as a protest against the military junta regime and their human rights record!

Look at any images or footage of him playing for Holland - all of the team wore three stripes on their shirts and shorts, sponsored by Adidas - Cruyff wore TWO! "Im a footballer, not a product" -UNTHINKABLE TODAY!
He could play a bit as well - a notch below Maradona in the greatest ever and certainly the best european.

So, a two parter to the massive -Was he the coolest footballer ever and, if not, who?

and...Who else has lost the love...I dont mean 'gone off it a bit', I mean lost it.

The First Rule Of Rock...

is, the same as the first rule of football.

'At any level, get yourself a decent goalkeeper or else you are going nowhere'

Replace 'Goalkeeper' with 'Drummer'.

Unless you are The Velvet Underground.
