Creepy computers.

This post might mean I'm a complete luddite but something has started to bother me. I thought I was imagining it but about fifteen minutes ago I was perusing the Sugar/Copper Blue thread. I was going to post that I'd seen them BITD and they were good, but others had posted similar so I left it without a contribution. Next I surfed over to some football website and suddenly remembered I hadn't heard the new Madonna single. So I go to youtube and whaddya know? They're recommending Sugar videos. Plus some Judie Tzuke. So basically they're reading what I'm reading here and recommending it back to me? I find that a bit disturbing and intrusive. When did this start and how far do they go? And who *are* "they" anyway?

Is it time to boycott Match Of The Day?

I'm getting close to not being able to bear it any more. Instead of something I enjoy, and I enjoy football to the point of obsession like a lot of people, this Saturday night 'entertainment' programme is now making me weep with frustration and boredom. Can nothing be done? Never thought I'd rue the day Jimmy Hill called it a day. Am I alone in this? Do people enjoy hearing Lawro's quips and Big Al's whatever-he-saysness?

Leonard hits the spot.

Old Ideas, Leonard Cohen's new album, is streaming on various websites and boy is it good! Easily the best one he's made since The Future on first listen, though it's got more in common with I'm Your Man. It's like he knows what we want now after those amazing gigs and he's given us some fantastic new songs. I don't want to knock Ten New Songs or Dear Heather which have their moments but this is the real deal. People will cover these songs round the world. I'm so bloody excited. Marvellous.

Best British songwriter of the last 20 years?

I recently heard Noel Gallagher described as such and needless to say my blood it did boil. It's a tricky one to come up with strong alternatives. Immediately I thought of Goldfrapp, Richard X (or Xenomania) and Nick Cave (well he lives here!) but after that was a bit stumped. I'm sure I'm forgetting some obvious candidates. Who immediately springs to your mind?

FA Cup magic still present and correct!

Thoroughly enjoyed this afternoon's entertainment. Then the draw itself strangely throws together not just the currently warring scouser/manc faction, but the possibility of QPR/Chelsea again. Unbelievable.

Dylan quizzes.

I hadn't seen these before:

I only managed 105 points on each...no doubt some here could get them all...
Happy Bobmas! x

Ken Russell has died.

He was great wasn't he? I'd say rest in peace but I doubt peace was ever his objective - he was such a lively one. I loved his crazy 70s films.

Leveson enquiry.

Does anyone here really believe that it was only the NOTW and not the Mirror, Sun and Daily Mail hacking phones? Surely they were all at it? Would have thought now it'd be easier for them all to admit it, thus watering down the punishments, than pretend it was one rogue researcher. Or maybe the other papers had too high a moral code to stoop so low...

Pre-ordure.

Like most people of a certain age there's many a silly marketing notion that irritate me but the worst has to be the notion of 'pre-ordering'. I just saw an advert where you can pre-order Some Girls by the Stones. Ok, I'm sure it's been remixed/remastered/whatever but what a load of double-speak sh*te!
What the hell does pre-order actually mean anyway? That you pay for it before you get it? Or you order it before you pay for it? Does it mean the company you're paying can let the money sit it the bank longer? But they're going to get the money anyway so what's the difference?
Just seems like utter nonsense and even more so when it's for an album that came out thirty years ago.
I'm to the chippy now to pre-order some fish and chips...

Why did Diamond Dogs only get to number 21?

Also, according to chart files, Bowie's single entries in 1974 went as follows:
Feb Rebel Rebel no5
Apr Rock And Roll Suicide no22
June Diamond Dogs no 21
Sept Knock On Wood no10

Why is a track from Ziggy sandwiched between two tracks from the Diamond Dogs album?
I appreciate this may be a bit of a niche enquiry but it's bugging me. Was DD seen as a success or not? (I know I need to go and buy that bloke-from-the-podcast's new book...)

Pete Townsend on 6music's inaugural

'Peel Lecture'. Great stuff but not long enough even with questions. I'd advise anyone here to check it out.

Nick Cave on Red Hot Chili Peppers:

“I’m forever near a stereo saying, ‘What the fuck is this garbage?’ And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers.”

More insults here, some childish, some offensive and the odd really funny one:

DLT - the king of unwanted imagery.

Introducing David Dundas' Jeans On on the latest TOTP 76 he comes up with this amazing line:
"This new entry is all about something that we do first thing in the morning - well, for me personally second thing in the morning."
What could he possibly be talking about? Oh, the horror...
