The Bounty Hunter.
I doubt anyone here would be making a bee-line for the latest Jennifer Aniston rom(ish)-com, but can I just warn you all it's utter, utter rubbish. Went as a compromise for mate's FPO after deciding she wouldn't be able to handle The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Big mistake. Bad plot, bad acting, horrendous soundtrack. Seen better plots on The Bill.
Why have the tabloids turned on Take That?
I doubt many people here care particularly but it seems strange to me that all of a sudden Take That are being attacked by the tabloids for basically sleeping with women. I mean surely they've been up to this sort of mischief for a long, long time - four good looking rich, successful blokes constantly surrounded by temptation - and have hardly committed any crimes.
On top of that (!) presumably the tabloids would have known of their peccadilllos for years, but have only decided to bring them out into the open now. All a bit grim if you ask me. Has someone fallen out with someone?
C'mon Cliff! How did we used to pick the Eurovision entry?
Some readers here must be old enough to remember how we used to pick our Eurovision Song Contest entries like Sandie Shaw, Bucks Fizz and Lyndsey De Paul. Was it always the Simon Cowellesque trial by tv?
This year bloody Pete Waterman has written the song. Haven't heard it yet, it may be a classic as good as One For Sorrow or it may be a dud like She Wants To Dance With Me.
Either way haven't we missed a trick here? Why not enter Cliff for his third go. Surely he'd get the sympathy vote and sort out that little misunderstanding with General Franco back in the day?
The Observer follows The Word's lead.
I heard all the rumours about the Guardian/Observer staff, but it seems to me the new Observer is bloody great. There's nice, big, long, long articles with lots of words contained therein. If it's going down, then it's going down fighting. Feels less smug and not trying to be as hip.
Apologies if this was discussed last week.
Dennis Wilson
good looking programme on BBC4 now. I'm taping it in a retro style.
The gay 80s
Mark Almond, Boy George, Andy Bell, Jimi Somerville, Elton, Limahl, Frankie (Holly and Paul), George Micheal, Pet Shop Boys...the 80s were dominated by gay popstars. Most of them household names who enjoyed huge success. What happened? The independent scene was spearheaded by REM in the states and The Smiths here - with lead singers a far cry from the current laddish indie scene. Now I see the coming NME awards features a 'hottest female' category!
Things have really changed. Haven't they?
Three bands in one.
I once had the pleasure of seeing The Hollies (around seven years ago at a guess). The singer was none other than the sadly deceased Carl Wayne. Tony Hicks was the main 'Holl' and the bassist was the guy from Mud (Ray Stiles?)
So the gig was a variety of Hollies classics, some great Move stuff (definitely including I Can Hear The Grass Grow and Fire Brigade) and during the encore the band did a great version of Tiger Feet to *ahem* tiger boot.
Part of the joy of the whole thing was Carl and Ray weren't particularly billed as a major part of it, so the Move/Mud stuff was all a welcome surprise. I'd gone along happy enough to hear Tony Hicks play guitar (fantastically well I might add, he's sorely underrated.)
Has anyone else seen three classic english bands in one? Certainly not as consistent as that I'd wager...
Band/Artist nicknames
Ok, so we're all au fait with The HJH Hitmakers, better known as the Fab Four, and The Strolling Bones. What other band nicknames are there, especially ones where the general public would know who you meant? One more...Old Blue Eyes
What areas of human life have not been
influenced/taken over by the internet? It's exactly ten years since I first got an email address. To quote the great man, 'Things Have Changed'. What hasn't? The only things I can think of are playing football (well, sport in general) and farming. There must be more...?
The Persuasionists
This current comedy on BBC2 has been called 'the worst comedy ever'. Could become a cult classic for all the wrong reasons. Anyone else seen it? To me it seems like a bad copy of the IT Crowd.
Beatles Radio.com
Has anyone else discovered this on itunes under classic rock in the radio section? I found it the other week and absolutely love it. Hardly any adverts and a great mix of HJH originals with covers and solo fabbery. Pretty cool.
Another not-so great list
According to The Brits these are the greatest albums from the last 30 years:
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
Dido - No Angel
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
Duffy - Rockferry
Keane - Hopes & Fears
Oasis - (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?
Phil Collins - No Jacket Required
Sade - Diamond Life
The Verve - Urban Hymns
Travis - The Man
I don't agree with the Brits here at all. Unless it means 'best-selling'? In which case I'm surprised Duffy sold more than Amy Winehouse. What a load of nonsense.
'We want your duff-duffs' Eastenders campaign
Is this the most cringiest campaign ever? Did someone there think it was a good idea? It's made my toes curl so badly I can barely walk anymore.
Orson Welles on TV
Seeing that clip on another thread reminded me there'd been a couple of documentaries on Orson Welles jsut before Xmas. Anyone know what they were or know if they might be available anywhere?
Aunty Boob
So with the inclemency meaning Man U versus Man City cancelled I did wonder what the Beeb might replace it with. Unbelievably they've gone with BBC News...a kind of bad weather special! Stuck in the house that's really NOT the escapism I was looking for. Like The Sweet, they just haven't a clue what to do. Grr.
