Spiritualized

I read with interest the Simon Price review of the new record in the new issue. Funnily enough, I've been on a bit of a Spiritualized binge in the last few days. The first four records are incredible, particularly 'Ladies and Gentlemen...' and I've had some of my most ecstatic experiences at their shows - particularly at Glastonbury 98 and '02, as well as the Hammersmith Apollo in 2001 and Brixton Academy in 2002.

What a magnificent uplifting noise.

Any other fans out there?

I tried to find the version of 'Shine A Light' from the Albert Hall show but this will have to do

Sugababes

There's a lot of talk at the moment about the original line up of the Sugababes reforming (Mutya, Heidi and Siobhan). It seems to me however that the classic line up of the band was the second line up, where Heidi replaced Siobhan and they went on to record a string of hits.

The first line up had one brilliant hit single 'Overload' and a patchy album.

The second line up released 'Freak Like Me', Round Round', 'Stronger', 'Hole in the Head', 'Too Lost In You', 'In The Middle', 'Caught in a Moment', 'Push The Button' and 'Red Dress'.

The third line up managed one brilliant single 'About You Now' and then fizzled out.

So why is there so much of a buzz about line up #1 reuniting?

I just realised that this might be the wrong forum for this question now that Bob's having a breather....

Your Highness

Has anyone else seen this film? I watched it last night - it's really quite odd. Mildly amusing but quite likeable. I just can't see it ever getting past the pitch meeting...

The musical experiences that affected you the most

What moments in music have you had that send shivers up your spine just by thinking about them?

Mine was seeing Blur play 'Tender' at Glastonbury in 2009. I've never seen a band connect with a crowd like that - everyone dissolved into the same experience, lost within it. For the rest of that night and well into the Monday morning, the 'oh my baby' refrain could be heard drifting around every field Glastonbury.

If you're short on time, skip to 5:00 and watch it through to the end, especially when Damon stops the band starting the next song (c8:50) so that they can listen to the crowd spontaneously singing. In his words it was 'as perfect a memory as I'll ever have'.

ATM: Rather dull iTunes query

When you've added a podcasts to playlists - how come it doesn't shuffle between them when they're finished? It will flick on to songs after the podcast has finished, but not vice versa.

I've been listening to them while I've been running and it's awkward to have to stop, unstrap the iPod and choose another one. #firstworldproblems

2012's bright new star?

Has anyone else heard Azealia Banks yet? Plenty here to love but also plenty that might repel the Word Massive. Personally, I think she's fresh, got a lot of charm, an individual style and I love what I've heard so far - particularly this catchy as hell electro track.

Warning: she's got quite the potty mouth.

Wind farms

Recently, we found out about a company who are planning to erect five 125m wind turbines about a mile down the road. We moved into the area about a year ago, with the view being a big part of the attraction.

A local pressure group has been set up, which initially seemed quite persuasive but which now appears a little shrill and rather rabid. I've been in contact with the energy company behind the application who have assured me that my concerns about shadow flicker and noise are ill founded. I've also been in touch with my MP who objects to the proposals.

I guess my only objection is an aesthetic one, which in the context of climate change is probably an unreasonable one, and the definition of nimby-ism. As such, I've become a bit more relaxed about it, although I keep reading about subsidies, wind farms being paid to be turned off etc. However, I've noticed that most of the 'anti' articles are in right wing press like the Mail and the Telegraph, both of whom print articles about the evils with such regularity that there must be some agenda - even if it's only pandering to a conservative, rural audience, all of which I seem to become the older I get.

This seems to be a bit of an emotive issue, with conflicting 'facts' on either side of the argument. It's very difficult to form a clear point of view, although I have an open mind on the subject.

Can you lot help? Anyone live close to a wind farm? Anyone in the know as to whether they are 'a good thing' or not?

The crass commercialisation of Christmas

Well, it went pretty well round my way. Eschewing the traditional delights of a tangerine or a ball on a string or something, I instead opted to receive a dirty great pile of music.

I'll show you mine if you show me yours...

Fame Studios Story box set
Nick Lowe - Quiet Please
Primal Scream/ MC5 - Black to Comm box set
Serge Gainsbourg best of
Brigitte Bardot Best Of
Randy Newman - Live in London
Devon Sproule - I Love You, Go Easy
Ke$ha - Animal/ Cannibal
Stan Getz and Jao Gilberto
Peter Tosh - Legalize It
Purrfect - the Best of Eartha Kitt

Result! God bless Amazon 'used and new' - it makes multiple gifts disgustingly cheap.

What did Santa bring you?

Shaun William Ryder

As some of my recent posts might have indicated, I'm going through a bit of a Mondays/ Black Grape revival at the moment. Much has been said about his extra curricular activities, not least by himself - the bit in his recent book where he encounters a savage baboon while on crack is a particular highlight, but his musical legacy is often overlooked.

I had the pleasure of meeting him (CLANG) at a rival magazine's awards party and what surprised me the most was the extent and breadth of his music knowledge and passion. He was particularly excited about meeting Dr. John.

In my opinion, he has been responsible for no less than three classic albums (Pills n' Thrills, Bummed and It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah) and there aren't many who can say that. He is also surely at the top table as a lyric writer.

So, what do you think? Is it time the man got his due as a musical icon rather than a hedonistic one?

Wow. Ke$ha does Dylan

She's released some excellent pop records over the last couple of years but this just absolutely floored me

Christmas music

I love Christmas music. I can't wait until December when I can dig out my Christmas records. They make me happier than most other music I own while also tugging at the heartstrings.

I've got no time for most alternative Christmas stuff - such as the Killers, that bloke from the Editors or that Bonnie Prince chap with a voice like a rusty gate - I mean the proper 70s and 80s Christmas music that brings happy nostalgic tears to my eyes and provides a direct link to my childhood, a more innocent time.

I have a Christmas amnesty for artists I usually steer well clear of, so the only song I have on my iPod playlist from the following bunch is their Christmas hit.

These include:

Shakin' Stevens 'Merry Christmas Everyone', Jonah Lewie 'Stop The Cavalry', Mike Oldfield 'In Dulci Jubilo', Greg Lake 'I Believe In Father Christmas', Elton John 'Step Into Christmas', Paul McCartney 'Wonderful Christmastime', Chris De Burgh 'A Spaceman Came Travelling', Wham 'Last Christmas', Mariah Carey 'All I Want For Christmas Is You', the Pretenders '2000 Miles' and (ahem) Gary Glitter 'Rock and Roll Christmas'.

Plus contributions from my more favoured artists:

John Lennon, Pogues, Eartha Kitt, Ronettes, Slade, The Crystals and errr The Waitresses.

Does anyone else get a warm, fuzzy glow from Christmas music?

The Stone Roses are playing tonight

Rumours are circulating that the Roses are playing tonight at the Hillsborough JFT96 show in Manchester. A picture is doing the rounds of the band onstage soundchecking with Mick Jones added to the line up!

The La's to return in 2012?

The La's foum is all ablaze on the back of an interview someone has recently conducted with Lee where he talked about getting the second La's album out in 2012 on vinyl only. It will be called Callin' All #2 and will feature a load of the Kitchen Tape/ Crescent songs like Robberman, Was It Something I Said, Rebound, Human Race etc.

The guy who's posted it seems very genuine and credible.... Trying not to get my hopes up but this could be incredible if it happens.

The Scream vs MC5: Public Service Announcement

I am opening myself up to a double dose of ridicule here. Maybe even ridicule squared...

But for any Primal Scream or MC5 fans - the concert they played together at the Festival Hall in 2008 (one set each, then playing together has just come out on CD/ DVD - it's called 'Black to Comms'.

I had no idea it was out and just chanced upon it, so I thought there might be other fans out there who would be grateful for the public service announcement.
