The Spotify Generation

As I write, the house is resounding to music being played by my 10-year old ...from Spotify. He loves music (Killers, Muse etc) but has never owned a CD, cassette or vinyl album, and wouldn't know what to do with one if he was given it. I wonder if he's in the first generation who will never own any recorded music? It's not that odd really ...apart from a few impulse DVD purchases, I've never owned a TV show, so why should music be any different? Of course, we're sorry that they won't ever have the thrill of reading an album sleeve, but maybe musicians should launch every album with an accompanying booklet or magazine, for the benefit of the increasing number of fans who will never buy their music?

Best Word Ever in a song title

This is a version of "what's on your iTunes" for those people who want more of a challenge than contributing to The Randomizer provides. Actually, you can do it with Spotify too. Think of a single word, put it into the iTunes or Spotify search box, and come up with a brilliant playlist. I did it today by accident, looking for a particular track; I typed in "heroes" and was confronted by this almost faultless selection of music, admittedly including several versions of the same song:

Just For One Day (Heroes) (Extended Version) - David Bowie (from Club Bowie)
Heroes - David Bowie (from Heroes)
White Boys And Heroes - Gary Numan (from Exhibition)
Superheroes Of BMX - Mogwai (from Government Commissions)
Heroes - Peter Gabriel (from Scratch My Back)
Heroes (Aphex Twin Remix) - Philip Glass (from 26 Mixes For Cash)
Heroes - Philip Glass (from Heroes Symphony)
No More Heroes - The Stranglers (from Collection 1977-1982)
Weak Become Heroes - The Streets (from Original Pirate Material)

Yes Progressive Rock!

I stumbled on a bizarre album on Spotify today which was made all the more intriguing by the fact I can't find *anything* about it on teh interwebz, other than people (including eMusic, iTunes and Amazon) flogging it. But even they don't have any reviews, making me wonder if anyone's ever listened to it.

The album is called "Yes Progressive Rock!" and appears to be a set of cover versions of songs from "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall" performed largely by former members of Yes. It's from 2007.

Can anyone in the massive provide any background to the album? It's not that great, by the way.

A coveted support slot with Lisa Dominique

I'm spending a not insubstantial period of my life putting together an archive of all the lyrics of the great Half Man Half Biscuit - and yesterday I added the song Fretwork Homework which contains the verse:

We’re into the final of The Battle Of The Bands
And we’re gonna win ‘cos we’ve got the most fans
A day in the studio and two hundred quid
And a coveted support slot with Lisa Dominique

Now, my curiosity about Ms Dominique was piqued by this, but on investigation, I can't find any references to her since about 2002. I'm rather worried, because as any HMHB fan knows, a mention in a Nigel Blackwell song can very often lead to premature expiration. He seems to have that effect on many celebrities - the song Rod Hull is Alive - Why? being a particularly fine example, because he quite quickly wasn't.

So are you out there, Lisa Dominique?
