Solid Air V Inside Out
To take a leaf from Formbymans post... what would the massive choose between these two John Martyn albums. Both released in the same year, both similar in tone but the latter, in my opinion, darker in mood, more expressive, honest, intimate and sincere ( for want of a better word ). Solid Air is the classic but Inside Out is Martyn holding a mirror up to his life, following his muse and influences and bearing his soul. Fine Lines, Make No Mistake, Ways To Cry , So Much In Love With You....all sublime and the better of Solid Air in my opinion.
Anyone care to comment?
Green On Red Giveaway!
Any Green On Red fans out there interested in owning a T Shirt signed ( mostly illegibly to be fair ) by Dan Stuart and Chuck Prophet? I won this in a competition in about 1991 ( think I must have been the only entrant! ). It's a size large, never been worn and one of them has added 'Dig It' along with their autographs. T Shirt depicts the cover of the Scapegoats album. Now, I appreciate their might an extremely niche market for this item but it's free to any one who might appreciate it.
Don't all rush at once!!!
What's your idea of hell?
Sitting here bored and pondering anything that will distract me from actually doing any work. Time dragging and this not helped by the office clock being stuck at 8.45 and no one can be bothered to change the battery. It feels like I'm in limbo which made me wonder what my own personal 'hell' would be. I've decided it would be stuck in a room with a banjo player or, posssibly, someone playing polka music on an accordian.
Think I'll try and look busy now.
Alternate History
Revolver must be my favourite Beatles album but I have never liked Yellow Submarine - it just jars on me. When I sequence this album on my ipod Yellow Submarine and Good Day Sunshine get the boot to be replaced by Paperback Writer and Rain. Voila - the perfect Beatles album ( IMHO ). Am I alone in this habit of rejigging classic albums?
Would Pepper be better with Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane included and When I'm 64 and...well I can't think what else I'd ditch to be honest! As for The White Album! Has anyone managed to condense it down to one albums worth of material.......over to you.
Aspiring Guitar Players
I suspect this site is littered with with amateur guitarists like myself. I'm wrestling with Time Of No Reply by Nick Drake at the minute which is in a brain melting CFCFCF tuning.
Just wondered what songs others are attempting at the moment and what your party piece is - I can just about manage a passable Blackbird. Also any good internet tab sites anyone can recommend?
Local Heroes
Back in late 80's Glasgow i would regularly attend gigs by Big George and The Business ( a no nonsense 3 piece blues band fronted by the aforementioned Big George ). I was always assured a great nights entertainment and the big mans guitar playing was consistantly brilliant. George 'liked a drink' and was a gregarious soul on stage. His rake thin physique, skin tight jeans, waistcoat, battered hat, baird and straggly hair meant he was no ones idea of a pin up but he was held in great affection by those who follwed him.
I recall one memborable lunch time gig in a wee pub where George was doing an acoustic set accompanied by, of all things, a bazouki player. Between each number George would throw a fiver at the bar and request a Southern Comfort. This would be refused by bar staff who , apparently, had been instructed by Georges aunty not to supply him with alcohol or else they would have to answer to her ( a threat bar staff seemed to be taking very seriously! ). Much muttering and colourful complaining from George would ensue which led to an improvised guitar / bazouki blues jam lamenting the intervention of his all powerful aunty.
Anyway, with the passing of time George and I went our seperate ways and i have no idea what became of him. But, for a while , he was my Local Hero and I have very fond memories of him and his music.
Just wondered if anyone else had memories of local musicians / bands they follwed in their youth?
