Larry Bee's blog
it seems to be geting a bit serious round here of late...
While the cat's away.........
The mouse will play The The.
Half Term has ensured that I've had a night to myself while the FPO and young 'uns are in Edinburgh for a couple of days.
This didn't turn out to be anything like as exciting as I initially envisaged.
Have scoured my personal stuff on the Sky planner and realised most of it is crap, resulting in the failsafe option of seeing what you lot have been on about of late (hasn't let me down..never does).
Musically it's been Matt Johnson all the way. I can't recall many mentions in the mag or on the blog since my discovery of all things 'Word', which is pretty much day one.
Surely I'm not the only one?
what's your favourite ever song..
this might be mine
Sigur Ros...Heima
This DVD is beautiful...these fellas don't get much press in these parts and as a confirmed wordista I'm a tad curious to found out if it's just me, or do they have a RT sized following that needs a gentle prod to express their appreciation.
The DVD *Heima* is a joy, full of incredible cinematography and wonderful imagery which totally encapsulates the *feel* of Sigur Ros (Sorry if that sounded a bit like a 'Pop Mirror' review but it's Sunday night and I've had more than a couple of Ruddles in my local).
Anyway.....what d'yer reckon?
Longest intro ever?
Is this the longest, and (IMHO)most engaging intro ever...
Am physically drawing back from the laptop screen to avoid the backlash!
Rod Hull and Emu doing Firestarter....really
I know this has been around for a while but it still cracks me up.
Emu genuinely looks off his tits!
Is there a purer more joyous pop song than this?
Prove it!
My night with John Grant and a F**kwit
On Thursday night I went to see John Grant at the Static Gallery in Liverpool.
I was looking forward to this enormously until earlier in the week when both of my ears decided, handily, to block up simultaneously resulting in all conversation seeming to be through a paper and comb combo. This has also exacerbated my already ball achingly irritating tinnitus (the exact start of which I can date to my birthday 17 years ago in Sankey Soap Manchester during which I decided during a chemically enhanced appreciation of the muuusiiiic maaaan to rest my head against a speaker unit the size of a small garage).
Despite this, me and my GLW thought sod it we'll have a couple of pints in the Grapes and see how it goes.
We got to the venue (trendy Arts Centre with several artists in residence studios opposite the bar) and went straight to the auditorium which was basically a large bare brick cellar. The descriptions of the venue aren't meant to sound critical, it was very atmospheric and quite cool.
Candy Payne was supporting doing an acoustic set with a George Harrison lookalike circa '69. At this point my lack of hearing wasn't too much of an issue - read into that what you will but she looked fantastic.
This is when The F**kwit turned up. Lead singer of the Zutons doing his best "check me out I'm In a band laaaaaaa" impression.
As a lot of you might guess John Grant audiences are a respectful bunch and his scally - lite behaviour stood out like a sore thumb. Mrs F**kwits presence was all the more bewildering as she didn't stop talking for the duration of the gig.
Sorry for the John G(rant) but it (almost) spoiled an already difficult night.
Any other "rockstars" misbehaved at gigs?
John Grant, Liverpool
I know he has quite a following in these parts so i thought i might submit my first post ever to keep the Liverpool element er...posted about the John Grant gig I've just stumbled on.
19th August at the Static Gallery on Roscoe Lane (staggering distance from the Grapes and the Pilgrim if anybody needed any more encouragement).
Despite being a pretty frequent Liverpool gig goer I've never heard of the place which only adds to my already hard to contain excitement.
Tickets are a tenner, already sorted my GF and mine.
Any interest?
